Starter Matching Activity Match the equation with its correct description in words whilst discussing the method with your partner. Then solve the equations in your books together with your partner.

Learning Objectives Develop confidence with the notation used in equations. To be able to create and solve your own equations, where the unknown appears once. To devise their own methods for solving the equations. To be able to teach and learn from each other.

Presenting new Information Creating and Solving Equations When you are asked to solve an equation you are usually presented with an equation and asked to solve it. We are going to work backwards to help us develop methods for solving equations. This will give us an insight into how the equation has been built up.

Construct the learning You need to work through the sheet and work out what these expressions would be equal to. Consider the methods demonstrated and how the equations have been built up.

Demonstrate the learning Stage 1 You now need to work with your partner to create your own equations, use the layout from the first sheet to guide you. You equations show be made up of a minimum of 3 stages. The final equation that you create will look like this. You will an expression in the first bubble and a number after the equals sign. = You have 15 minutes for this activity.

Demonstrate the learning Stage 2 In 10 mins time you will need to transfer you hardest equations on to a small sheet of paper this will be swopped with someone else in the room. So make your equations as challenging as possible. You equations show be made up of a minimum of 3 stages. The final equation that you create will look like this. You will an expression in the first bubble and a number after the equals sign =

Your task You will need to create 2 equations. Each equation must have been created from a minimum of 3 stages. Check you answer by substituting. When you have finished creating your own, write your equations on your sheets.

Learning Objectives Develop confidence with the notation used in equations. To be able to create and solve your own equations, where the unknown appears once. To devise their own methods for solving the equations. To be able to teach and learn from each other.
