Entomological Surveillance Working Group (ESWG) Establishing ‘Best Practices’ for Entomological Surveillance: Part 1: Data Management/ Reporting Problem Statement MAJ Jeffrey Clark Dr. Des Foley Mr. David Pecor Walter Reed Biosystematics Unit Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR)

2 Overview 1. Review of last meeting 2. Establishing a Best Practices Guide 3. Problem Statement: Data Management/ Reporting 4. Discussion 5. News you can use 6. Data/ Voucher specimen submission updates 7. Goals for next meeting

3 FDS system Previous Meeting Sept. 16, 2015 Voucher Service ESWG website

4 Establishing a Best Practices Guide “Contribute to the protection of all DoD health care beneficiaries and the global community through an integrated worldwide emerging infectious disease surveillance system” –GEIS 1.Data Management/ Reporting 2.Surveillance Methods 3.Vector Identification 4.Pathogen Screening

5 Problem Statement: Data Management/ Reporting Ideally, all entomological surveillance data generated by DoD laboratories, particularly by projects funded by GEIS, would be preserved, managed and made available at a central source. In exchange for data deposits, partners could expect custom products and services that add additional value to this data in direct support of their efforts. This approach would be in line with an overall integrated vector management strategy designed to support evidence-based decision making to reduce the risk of vector-borne disease transmission among U.S. military personnel. A central repository for data would provide entomologists and other public health personnel with permissions-based access to current and historical surveillance data to identify gaps in surveillance coverage and guide future research. Climate, land cover and other data related to vector ecology but not directly measured by the surveillance program could be combined with entomological and epidemiological surveillance data from other sources to produce high quality vector and disease hazard maps on a routine basis. Finally, this data could also be used to generate reports on the global impact of GEIS funded entomological surveillance.

6 Challenges All entomological surveillance data must be standardized and meet minimum essential reporting requirements Communication between partners and the managers of the data repository is essential from the planning to final reporting stages of surveillance activities Partners must be able to request and receive products and services (i.e. distribution maps, data summaries, distribution models, etc.) in a timely manner Data submitters must have control over the timing of data releases

7 Discussion In your opinion, is this a legitimate problem worth putting our time and effort in to?

8 Discussion Based on past experience, what barriers exist to solving this problem?

9 Data Collection and Reporting Standards Products and Services Planning and Logistics Access Communication

12 Working Document 1.Comment 2.Contribute 3.Edit

13 Discussion What other concerns do you have about this effort?

14 Discussion What products and services would make it worth your time and effort to report data to a central repository?

15 News You Can Use Conn. Jan E. 2015. Entomological Monitoring and Evaluation: Diverse Transmission Settings of ICEMR Projects Will Require Local and Regional Malaria Elimination Strategies. Am. J. Trop. Med. Hyg., 93(Suppl 3), 2015, pp. 28–41. In Other News? Surveillance Activities, Publications, Announcements, Other?

16 Reminder: Data and Voucher Submissions Voucher Service Questionnaire: If you are planning on submitting vouchers this year please fill out and return the voucher service questionnaire so we can assemble and ship your submission kit. Your kit will include the following based on your specific needs: Preservation materials Labeling supplies Shipping instructions Data submissions: If you have any data to submit please contact us. We can process your data as is or provide you with data entry forms.
