ActionWebs & TRUST grad students participate with Tech Talks REU AY: Leveraged Partnerships Center Education, K. Gates, S. Meldal Academic Year: 2010-11

Gates Outreach: Research Experience for Teachers (RET) Research Experience for SF Bay Area Master Teachers Program Overview: 10 week research experience Research guided by faculty mentors and graduate students Classroom and Lab Activities Professional Development Activities Partnering with SUPERB-CPS Development of course materials, electronic portfolios, and research activities Stipend with Travel Allowance Room and board provided at International House Cohort: 3 to 4 master teachers per year Program Evaluation and Assessment Evaluation Rubrics Follow-up surveys Poster Sessions Tracking course development and adoption Timeline: Years 2-5

6 6 ActionWebs Meeting– July 23, 2010 Outreach: Increasing the Participation of Women ActionWebs will Influence Recruitment and Retention Target objective of 30% participation of women in the center CPSS research  Curriculum  RET  REU This will be achieved by: Creating Coursework with Social Relevance Research Opportunities for Undergraduates Integrated Research across the Curriculum and Academic experience Recruitment of Women Financial Support Cohort of 10-15 students per year Timeline: Years 2-5 Education, K. ACTIVITIES What the program does with the inputs to fulfill its mission OUTPUTS The direct products of program activities. OUTCOMES Benefits for participants during and after program activities Summary of Program Outcomes Model The purpose for evaluation is to understand the degree to which the project goals are being met and to monitor and improve project effectiveness along the way in an effort to help reach those goals. Significant attention will be paid to gathering and tracking longitudinal data so that we can document overall impact of engagement with and support of ActionWebs on participant educational and career choices.

8 8 ActionWebs Meeting– July 23, 2010 Education, K. Gates Looking Forward Curriculum Development will leverage existing courses with new and revised courses offering Mentoring Post-Docs provide tools for success in both academic and industrial settings. Curriculum Development at SJSU will leverage and expand current programs as well as create new undergraduate research opportunities at SJSU. SJSU Capacity Building Program will draw in California State University System and broaden participation. REU and RET programs will attract and retain students in STEM, create research opportunities for students and begin to file the STEM pipeline at the high school level. Increasing participation of women will support NSF broadening participation initiatives and US workforce development in STEM fields.
