Bell Work!!! Describe what it means for YOU to be an advocate for a drug free life.

Advocating for Being Drug Free

What can you do to help your little brother, sister or cousin stay drug free?

What can you do? Be a good role model and stay drug free yourself. Help them understand the negative consequences of using drugs. Teach them ways to resist pressure to use drugs.

What can you do to help middle school and high school students stay drug free?

What can you do? Encourage them to get involved in clubs or committees that advocate being drug free. Help organize drug-free activities. Be proud of and talk about your decision to be drug free.

Turn to “Helping Myself by Helping Others” on page 30. You will be in groups of 3. Follow the directions and complete the activity sheet.

Friends are very influential during the teen years. You can take action by encouraging friends, other students, or even family members to adopt a drug-free lifestyle.

What is an advocacy campaign?

An advocacy campaign is a series of planned activities that encourage others to practice safe and healthy behaviors.

A public service announcement is a message that raises public awareness on an important issue. You’re going to have the opportunity to create a public service announcement that advocates a drug-free lifestyle.

What are some examples of activities that could be part of an advocacy campaign?

Advocacy? Public service announcements Letters to the editor Poster campaigns Articles for the school or local paper Presentations

Turn to your “Health Essay” worksheet. This worksheet is the first step in making your own article for the Southland Independent.

You are going to write an essay that explains all of the different material you have learned in class during this unit. The questions on the worksheet in front of you are designed to help you write your essay.

For today, answer the questions on the worksheet and hand-write your first draft. Your essay should be 1+ page(s) and you should pay careful attention to grammar and punctuation. Why??? Because the top 2 essays will be printed in the Southland Independent.

The next class will be your ONLY opportunity to type your paper in the middle school lab. For this reason, make the most of your prep- time today and over the weekend.
