3 Genre – What do we mean by Genre, is it? a. a type or kind of text? b. a species? c. something unique? d. the gender of a person? e. something very clever? f. a detective novel? g. something written?

4 Audience Audience is an important part of context, and audiences for texts change over time. Part of today's audience for Shakespeare are students studying for examinations, which of course did not happen when the plays were first performed. The audience for texts might include: a theatre audience, which will have changed over time as theatres have changed readers who buy or borrow a published text; the size and make-up of this audience will have changed over time, as a larger proportion of the population have become educated and have learnt to read the writer him or herself in the case of a diary or journal a particular individual, in the case of a letter in a love poem, for example, both the person addressed and a wider audience if the poem is intended for publication a film, radio or television audience; a text may be produced with a particular audience in mind, such as children or teenagers.
