12 Society of Professional Journalists: SEEK TRUTH AND REPORT IT Journalists should… Tell the story of the diversity and magnitude of the human experience boldly, even when it is unpopular to do so. Avoid stereotyping by race, gender, age, religion, ethnicity, geography, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance or social status. Support the open exchange of views, even views they find repugnant. Give voice to the voiceless; official and unofficial sources of information can be equally valid.

13 In the HUB Voice to the voiceless: White Student Union, special ed students taking the CAHSEE, Korean families making do without dad Monitor power: use of legal supplements at football breakfasts, evaluate new principal’s performance, “no dating” policy for women’s basketball team, editorial criticism of daily announcements, medical marijuana challenges to school policy

14 How The HUB does story assignments: Randomly assigned groups Each group has to come up with stories that fit ‘Voice to the Voiceless’ and ‘Monitor Power’ imperatives

15 Your Turn! Your group needs to think of story ideas for news, feature, sports, and op-ed sections that fit VV or MP categories.
