1 Photosynthesis 8-2

2 What Role do Pigments play in Photosynthesis?
R O Y G B I V Pigments- colored substances that reflect or absorb light.  Chlorophyll- green pigment in plants, absorb red and blue regions.  Carotenoid- orange/yellow pigments found in carrots, absorb green and blue regions.  Chloroplast- organelle in the leaf where sunlight is collected and photosynthesis takes place.

3 Chloroplast Thylakoids- Saclike photosynthetic membranes (Grana-Stacks of thylakoids) Stroma- Fluid Portion of the chloroplast outside of the thylakoid

4 NADP+ Electron Energy Carrier that transfers energy to another molecule. Accepts 2 high energy electrons and one H+ (Hydrogen Ion) and converts NADP+ into NADPH.

5 Conversion of NADP+ into NADPH
Energy of the sunlight can be trapped in chemical form.

6 NADPH Carry the high-energy electrons that were produced by light absorption in chlorophyll to chemical reactions elsewhere in the cell. Help build molecules the cell needs like carbohydrates such as glucose.

7 2 Stages of Photosynthesis
1.) Light Dependent Stage 1. Sunlight hits the leaf and solar energy is collected in the chloroplast. 2. Electrons become “excited”. 3. Water is split- H’s carry electrons/ O’s sent to atmosphere.

8 2.) Light-Independent Reactions
CO2 from atmosphere enters the leaf. Calvin Cycle X6 Glucose made

9 Factors affecting Photosynthesis
Light Intensity Carbon Dioxide Concentration Temperature Water

10  Uses of Glucose Animal Energy Plant Growth/ Starch
