2. All about Floods A flood is an overflow of water that comes on to land. There can be floods if there is too much water in a river or lake, that overflows or breaks levees so the water escapes from the lake or river. Floods can be bigger or smaller but it is most important when it reaches a village or town where it can destroy homes, cars, everything…

3. Floods in Europe When there was destruction because of the Great Flood of Paris in 1910, the French built reservoirs called, Les Grands Lacs de Seine. They were also known as the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes helped during the regular winter floods. There is a mechanical barrier protecting London from floods. The barrier is over the River Thames and is raised if the water gets too high. Venice has a similar arrangement to London. The river in the Czech Republic, flooded many houses and a village in 2002. The biggest flood defenses are in the Netherlands. They have become aware because of the North Sea Flood in 1953. It occurred in the southwestern part of the Netherlands. They have one of the world’s biggest dams, the Afsluitdijk. Russia has eleven dams that go on for 25.4 kilometers and are eight meters above water level in Saint Petersburg.

4. Floods in Ireland There have been terrible floods all over Ireland for years but it’s come to one of Ireland’s worst. Kerry, Cork, Mayo, Galway and Donegal have been struck by horrific floods that forced families to move out of their homes. The Liffey’s banks also burst recently. There hasn’t been a flood this bad in a hundred years! The people still haven’t gotten their homes back and it will take a while to get everything back to normal in their lives. Everyone hopes that it will turn out OK for the poor families.
