What is a Frankentoy? Taking old toys apart, exchanging body parts, adding body parts, making a whole new toy!

Why do a Teen Frankentoys Program? We needed an event for Teen Tech Week. Found inspiration from Pinterest, Grand Island Public Library and Council Bluffs Public Library

How is toy Destruction “techish?”

It’s Re-engineering!

Teens were challenged to expand their thinking and creativity by re-engineering common toys into something new and innovative. This is what we asked them to do:

Why do this? It’s not the monster Mash- it’s a Paradigm Shift A shift from Teaching Learning to Developing Learners.

Paradigm shift We are currently preparing students for jobs that don’t even exist yet, Using technologies that haven’t been invented, In order to solve problems that we don’t even know are problems. - Fisch and McLeod New technologies require new skill sets. Futurist author Thomas Frey

The top 10 In-Demand jobs of 2010 did not even exist in 2004. Former Secretary of Education, Richard Riley How quickly are things Changing?

From Forbes magazine The top ten in-demand jobs in 2012 that did not exist in 2004 were: App developer Elder Care Specialist Market research data miner Admissions consultant Millennial generation expert Social Media Manager Cloud Computing services Chief Listening Manager Sustainability expert User experience designer

Community Response Provide opportunities to develop learners by: Focus Schools The Career Academy Increased use of technology (Chromebooks) “Hands on learning”

Library Response Provide opportunities to develop learners by: Awesome programming Take the info out of the book and help them experience it. Kinesthetic learning LCL slogan currently in use – “Libraries are more than books”

Creativity is as important as literacy. Sir Ken Robinson, University of Warwick

Frankentoys – Summer Reading Our Teen Tech Week Program was so successful that we made it a summer reading event. Meet Connie!

How we did the program

Supplies: Needles & thread, foam trays, duct tape, hot glue and ….TOYS. Almost all of the toys we used were gathered from donations.

Ask for Help!

Donations Staff and co-workers Volunteers, customers, and especially the storytime parents. Don’t forget thrift stores and garage sales! Hit their sale dates - $1/bag sale

Donations!

Staff/Volunteers You will need volunteers for this program. Plan on it! Teen Advisory Board & Adult Volunteers

Prep Work Wash some items at home if needed. Consider “baking” the plush toys.

Keep it Fun! Library Operating Crew

Meet Kael!

Set-Up Arrange “ The Laboratory ” into sections. Soft and hard toys grouped separately.

Raw materials

The Boneyard We designated a volunteer to be the “ Bone Collector ”.

The Bone Yard held chopped off pieces, arms, feet, fins, that other teens could use to make their creation perfect.

Engineers at Work

Dismantle It! Scissors at each work table Hack Saw Rubber mallet (No drills)

Sew It! Thread Needles Needle Pullers Volunteers who aren’t afraid of sewing

Glue It! High temperature hot glue guns. Teens brought their project to the gluing station. Staff would glue at the direction of the teens.

What we learned We didn’t like E600 glue. It smells toxic and took too long to dry. Gluing items before sewing did not work. Low temp glue guns do not work on hard plastic. Use the high temp glue guns.

Longer needles are preferred to smaller needles for beginners. “Soft Sculpture Doll Needles.” Colored thread is fun! Buying stuffed animals from Goodwill was expensive.

Disassembling plastic toys was tricky. It took a lot of time and was dangerous. Child safety features required a special triangle shaped screw driver. Rubber mallet or brute force. Hack saw – minimally used by Adult Vol.

Results Creation brings ownership – Mollie and Oz “You’ll let me cut this up?” Permission to destroy = permission to create. Reinforces divergent thinking.

Build skills collaboration, creativity. One teen learned how to sew from another teen in attendance Going away gifts for each other “I thought I wouldn’t like this, but I’m making my second one!” “When are you doing this again?”

No fighting, worked together, helped each other. Shared, not territorial, not greedy. Came from all parts of the city and beyond. Parents of attendees wanted to try it.

Creativity on display
