3 1-Introduction This lesson was developed for first graders at Harry Russell Elementary in West Carrollton, Ohio. Throughout the process of this lesson the students will study and explore the lives of the Wright Brothers specifically pertaining to their invention of the airplane. This lesson will take place over a course of 6 days starting in the second week of March.

6 3-Objectives Students will: -examine significant events within the Wright Brothers’ lifetime -organize own life events on a timeline -compare and contrast own life events with those of the Wright Brothers -explore how aviation has changed through the years -create illustrations of what we may use to fly in the future -participate within discussion about Wright Memorial reunion -write in journals about reunions they have attended or witnessed -use a map of Dayton and United States to locate places of significance to the Wright Brothers

7 3-Objectives cont. -take a field trip to the Wright Cycle Company Museum -participate in discussion about the book My Brothers’ Flying Machine: Wilbur, Orville and Me by Jane Yolen -view and consider information included in the movie “This is American Charlie Brown: The Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk” -gain further information and test current knowledge on the Wright Brothers by playing the interactive online Wright Brothers game -participate in reader’s theater to overview knowledge gained about the Wright Brothers -complete a graphic organizer to summarize information learned -reflect learning in journals

8 4-Activities Over the course of five days, the students will participate in a variety of activities directly related to the Wright Brothers and developed through connections the students should be able to make from participation in these activities. By actively partaking in the process and through giving their best effort, students will be able to extend their background knowledge on significant events that occurred in the history of the surrounding areas. The evaluation of the unit will take place on the sixth day of the lesson.

9 4-Activities(Day 1) *Students will examine the significant life events occurring within the Wright Brothers lifetime. They will then research their own life events and place them on a time line. They will compare their own time line to the Wright Brothers time line through class discussion. History Benchmark B-Place events in correct order on a time line. Indicator #2(1 st grade)- Place events from one’s own life in a chronological order. *Students will explore how aviation has changed through the years and what it is today. Students will draw what they believe we will use to fly in the future. History Benchmark B-Place events in correct order on a time line. Indicator #3(1 st grade)- Distinguish among past, present and future.

10 4-Activites(Day 2) * Students will discuss the reunion that takes place each year on the anniversary of the Wright Brother’s first flight (December 17) at the Wright Memorial. The descendants of those who witnessed the first flight gather each year to lay wreaths in remembrance of the support that their ancestors offered to the Wright Brothers. Students will write in their journals about reunions that they have witnessed or attended (family reunions). People in Societies Benchmark B-Identify ways that different cultures within the United States and the world have shaped our national heritage. Indicator #3(1st grade)- Describe family and local community customs and traditions. * Students will make their own paper airplanes and experiment with directions and distance of flight. Geography Benchmark A- Identify the location of the state of Ohio, the United States, the continents and oceans on maps, globes and other geographic representations. Indicator #1a and b(1st grade)- Identify and correctly use terms related to location, direction and distance including: (a) left/right and (b) near/far.

11 4-Activites(Day 3) *Students will use a map of Dayton and the United States to locate places of significance for the Wright Brothers (Home, Huffman Prairie, Kitty Hawk, and the Wright Cycle Company). Geography Benchmark A-Identify the location of the state of Ohio, the United States, the continents and oceans on maps, globes and other geographic representations. Indicator #3(1 st grade)- Identify and use symbols to locate places of significance on maps and globes. *As a class, the students will take a field trip to the Wright Cycle Company in Downtown Dayton. Economics Benchmark B-Distinguish between goods and services and explain how people can be both buyers and sellers of goods and services. Indicator #2(1 st grade)-Describe the ways people produce, consume and exchange goods and services in their community.

12 4-Activities(Day 4) * The teacher will read My Brothers’ Flying Machine: Wilbur, Orville and Me by Jane Yolen, in this story Katharine talks about the contributions her brothers have made to aviation. History Benchmark C-Compare daily life in the past and present demonstrating an understanding that while basic human needs remain the same, they are met in different ways in different times and places. Indicator #4(1 st grade)-Raise questions about how families lived in the past and use photographs, letters, artifacts and books to clarify what is known and what is unknown. * Students will watch the movie “This is America Charlie Brown: The Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk” and then QuickTime clips of the Wright Brothers flying. Social Studies Skills and Methods Benchmark A- Obtain information from oral, visual, print and electronic sources. Indicator #1(1 st grade)- Obtain information about a topic using a variety of oral and visual sources.

13 4-Activities(Day 5) * During computer lab time, the students will pair up and play the interactive online Wright Brothers game. Social Studies Skills and Methods Benchmark A-Obtain information from oral, visual, print and electronic sources. Indicator #1(1 st grade)-Obtain information about a topic using a variety of oral and visual sources. *As a class the students will participate in Readers Theatre telling about the Life of the Wright Brothers in Sequence. Social Studies Skills and Methods Benchmark C-Communicate information orally, visually or in writing. Indicator #5(1 st grade)-Communicate information orally or visually.

14 5-Evaluation(Day 6) The evaluation of the students will be based on three areas: Area 1- The students' participation and quality of work throughout the week’s activities. Area 2- The students’ ability to work as a class to develop a graphic organizer displaying the information they have learned about the Wright Brothers. Area 3- Each student’s quality of work presented in an individual journal about the Wright Brothers and what he/she has learned.
