3 LOCAL PARTNERS IN NNIP The defining functions u Build and operate information systems with integrated and recurrently updated indicators on neighborhood conditions u Facilitate and promote the direct practical use of indicators by community and city leaders in community building and local policy making u Emphasize the use of information to build the capacities of institutions and residents in distressed neighborhoods.

6 u Promise and Choice Neighborhoods –Promise Neighborhoods award in several cities, work continuing in other cities –UI/NNIP & PolicyLink’s PNI: presentations, scoping work on performance monitoring & evaluation –NNIP School Readiness Initiative – continuing interest (“Thursday’s Child” presentation 5/19) –UI & Choice Neighborhoods - performance management paper & bid on evaluation RFP u Sustainable Communities Program –Support for data-driven planning –Local partners involved with applications ADVANCE THE STATE OF PRACTICE

7 u Comprehensive Community Development –Collaboration with LISC Building Sustainable Communities (MacArthur grant through 2013) –LISC initiatives expanded from 11 to 25 metros (106 neighborhoods) –5 NNIP partners involved with evaluation, new MCIC work on performance monitoring –UI analysis of metro and neighborhood change –Work in support of LISC’s new Institute for Comprehensive Community Development (ICCD) ADVANCE THE STATE OF PRACTICE

8 u The Foreclosure Crisis –Impacts on school children (Open Society, Casey) –Local partners continue to be on cutting-edge E.g., video on Cleveland NEO-CANDO applications –New Fed. Reserve project: data & neighborhood stabilization (papers, convenings, pilots) –Guide/indexes on Foreclosure-Response.org u NNIP Shared Indicators System –“Framework” paper - to be published in June –Pilot system in Minneapolis (McKnight support) –Cross-site analysis with national data (mid-2011) –First submissions of local data in 2012 ADVANCE THE STATE OF PRACTICE

9 u Strengthening NNIP internal support for partners –New NNIP website, development now underway Award to Appnovation Technologies (Matt Barry, Steve Spiker, & UI staff developed RFP) Partner activities linked/searchable –Plans for newsletter and new “Stories” reports –More webinars u NNIP Funders Network –Outreach to national organizations of local funders (community foundations, United Way, etc.) –Strategy for expanding/sustaining the field BUILD/STRENGTHEN LOCAL CAPACITY

10 u Expand community access to small area data –UI continues to update national datasets & make them available to public –New inventory of data visualization sites (Enterprise) –Expanded engagement with “open data” movement –Broader UI role to promote expansion of access to small area data - not yet funded u Other NNIP leadership in advancing the field –MacArthur-supported book (editors: Coulton, Kingsley, Pettit) –Collaborate with Open Indicators Consortium (OIC) –Work with Community Indicators Consortium (CIC) Charlotte Kahn, President; Kathy Pettit, Vice President Major NNIP role in “virtual” conference in March INFLUENCE NATIONAL CONTEXT
