2 The Charge of the Light Brigade in the Crimean War (Balaklava) What have you learnt? Why do you think, then, that the author has chosen these two military clashes in particular? What do they say about war more generally? Gallipoli – The Dardenelles campaign in WW1 DID YOU KNOW? The term Dardenelles is slang for military incompetence/disaster (‘down in the Dardenelles’)

3 The Charge of the Light Brigade in the Crimean War (Balaklava) 1853-1856: The Crimean war rages due to Western powers fears over Russian influence. Imperial Russia is on one side and an alliance including Britain and France on the other. The disastrous cavalry charge took place during the Battle of Balaclava in 1854. 1915-6: Allied forces, including Russians, attempted to capture Constantinople (modern day Istanbul). Unsuccessful, the campaign lasted 6 months and cost the allies ½ million lives Gallipoli – The Dardenelles campaign in WW1 DID YOU KNOW? 4 Heroic, but Naive? 600 horsemen on the English side Can you guess how many were killed or wounded? 400! All because their leader had made a dreadful mistake and misunderstood an order - they charged into battle when they were not supposed to (they were actually told just to retake some guns from the Russians)
