Introduction  The social problem that we chose to analyze for this project is elderly isolation. Social isolation of older citizens is one of the emerging problems of our society which has not received its due importance. Anyone can become isolated socially but seniors are especially at risk of social isolation.

Introduction - Continued  The social isolation among seniors might be due to many reasons. Some of them includes lose of spouse, living alone without any family, poor health, and retirement.  Elderly isolation is a type of neglect and is abuse, which is a crime in Canada.

Social Analysis What is the social problem?  The social problem that we choice, as mentioned before is elderly isolation. Who defines it?  Since we all have or is in some way or form touched by an elderly person in our lives, the simple answer to the question is that society defines elderly isolation as a problem.

Social Analysis - Continued Why is it considered a social problem?  Elderly isolation causes depression in the elderly that can lead to a premature death.  More seniors are being isolated and being send to nursing homes and the government have to spend more money on these homes.

Social Analysis - Continued Who or what effected? FFamilies CCommunities EEconomy or even global economy

Who benefits?  Overall no one benefits. Maybe the family for a short amount of time. Who loses?  Elderly  Society

Social Analysis - Continued What are possible solutions? Educate the public of elderly isolation and to make the seniors part of the community again and eliminating the loneliness in their life. Being students, we have the greatest opportunity of conveying our message to the most important and the strongest in the society, the youth.

Social Analysis - Continued What is the overall cost to society?  Micro level: Depression, premature death, diminished quality of life, potential for abuse, physical as well as mental declining of health.  Meso level: Communities not getting resources that the elderly would have to offer.  Macro level: Money that the government has to pay to keep our seniors save and taken care of in nursing homes.

Action Plan Here are some things that we thought students are able to do: We could meet with some of the elderly population. Prepare a good and effective story that reflects the problems that the old people are facing. Post it on facebook and printouts can be distributed in the schools. Paste printouts on the bus stops and subway stations; in the malls and where crowds of all age groups are present.

Action Plan - Continued We can use blogs to advertise this issue and create awareness. In college we can talk to the young people about the problems of senior isolation. We can also have street plays depicting the isolation as a social problem and spread awareness about it so it can be prevented. Banners can be made and once college work has been done even they can spread awareness in their groups.
