Graphing Linear Inequalities and Feasible Regions IMP3 Ms. Sia 9-19-08

Today’s Agenda Bell ringer Collect HW7 p. 26 and HW8 p. 30 Feasible Region, Profit Functions, Profit Lines notes Profitable Pictures p. 27-28

Announcements If you are interested in completing this class for honors credit, please see Ms. Sia DURING 9 TH PERIOD IN ROOM 208. I will give you information regarding this on Monday, September 22 nd. If you want to make up your POW, come to HW Hall Tuesdays and Thursdays with Ms. Sia during 9 th period until 4:30pm. If you attend SOJO’s Open House on Thursday, October 2 nd AND SEE ME, you will receive 5 points extra credit towards your POW. Solutions to HW5 p. 17 are online. Solutions to HW7 and HW8 will be posted online by Monday.

Vocabulary Feasible Region  The set of points that are solutions for two or more inequalities  Where the graphs of two or more inequalities overlap  Feasible means “possible” or “capable of being done” Profit Function  An algebraic expression representing how to calculate profit from a given situation Profit Lines  The set of points with a given profit  What did you notice with HW8

What do these letters mean? Answer Explanation Information Organization Understanding A+E+I+O=U I will use this to grade your homework.

So what’s my grade? Class work will be graded for completion (50 points, AEIOU). Homework is exactly that; you must complete it at home (100 points, AEIOU). If you actually DO it, the work we do in class allows you to successfully complete HW.

What are profit lines? HW8 p. 30 gives us a look at profit lines. Is profit a constraint? What do you notice about their behavior? Why do you think this happens?  They are parallel, they never intersect.  You cannot get the same profit from the same materials---- if you’re using more $ for more materials, you can’t expect to get the same amount of profit.  As profit lines move up in a feasible region, profit increases.

Profitable Pictures p. 28-29 Using the information from HW7 about Hassan and making pastels and watercolors, we came up with profit lines for $500, $600, and $1000. Using these profit lines and the feasible region, we found that (6,10), or 6 pastels and 10 watercolors maximizes Hassan’s profit with $1240.

Homework For those of you that have been coming to HW Hall to make up POWs, those are due next week, either Tuesday or Thursday, depending on when you first came to HW Hall.
