Are there priests in Christ’s church?
3
Priests are first introduced to us in the Old Testament. King Melchizedek was a priest of God (Genesis 14:18). Israel was to become a kingdom of priests and a holy nation (Exodus 19:5-6). Aaron and descendants ministered as priests before God (Exodus 28:1-2). A perpetual priesthood throughout generations (Exodus 40:12-15) Officiated at altar, offered sacrifices, performed duties in temple Instructors of God’s righteousness (Malachi 2:5-6)
4
Priests are first introduced to us in the Old Testament. Prophecy of Messianic king becoming a priest (Psalm 110:4). The Law of Moses had to change for Jesus to become God’s High Priest (Hebrews 7:11-14). The Law is now obsolete (Hebrews 8:13). The priesthood of Christ is not like the Levitical and Aaronic priesthood.
5
God’s Son Jesus is High Priest forever. High Priest of our confession (Hebrews 3:1) Sympathizing Priest who helps in times of need (4:14-16) Holds His priesthood permanently (7:24) Priest who saves and intercedes (7:25) High Priest who sacrificed Himself once for all (7:26, 27)
6
The church of Christ is a kingdom of priests of God (Revelation 1:6). Our Lord has brought into effect His new priesthood. Not a separate class of men with positions of authority. Christians compose Christ’s holy and royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:4-5, 9). Their function is to render spiritual sacrifice and service. Ephesians 2:21 Romans 12:1-2 Hebrews 13:15-16
