Mind Map

Definition (Widipedia) A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks or other items linked to and arranged radially around a central key word or idea. It is used to generate, visualize, structure and classify ideas, and as an aid in study, organization, problem solving, decision making, and writing.

It is an image-centered diagram that represents semantic or other connections between portions of information. By presenting these connections in a radial, non-linear graphical manner, it encourages a brainstorming approach to any given organizational task, eliminating the hurdle of initially establishing an intrinsically appropriate or relevant conceptual framework to work within.

Advantages of Using Mind Map more compact than conventional notes, helps making associations easily New information can be easily integrated with little disruption.

Mind Maps are also useful for: Summarizing information; Consolidating information from different research sources; Thinking through complex problems; and Presenting information in a format that shows the overall structure of your subject

How to do a Mind Map Mind mapping (or concept mapping) involves –writing down a central idea and –thinking up new and related ideas which radiate out from the centre. Use lines, colours, arrows, branches or some other way of showing connections between the ideas generated on your mind map

Some Tips Use capital letters to denote key points Main idea in the centre Leave a lot of space

Examples – Essay Preparation http://www.jcu.edu.au/studying/services/studyski lls/mindmap/essayprep.html#alternative Mind maps can help you in the early stages of your essay by summarising your research and providing you with a picture of all aspects of the question. You can then move from your non- linear mind map to a more structured essay plan.

Example: Essay Mind Map To plan a critical essay in engineering http://www.jcu.edu.au/studying/services/studyskills/mi ndmap/sampleessay.html

Example: Reading Mind Map Contains only the essential points picked up from the first reading Produced from memory alone. Space left for later modification or adding details and questions http://www.jcu.edu.au/studying/services/st udyskills/mindmap/samplereading.html

Example: Lecture Mind Map produced from standard lecture notes so that a student could clarify the key points of the lecture. produced in the first review after the lecture and was added to throughout the semester. then used for exam preparation. http://www.jcu.edu.au/studying/ser vices/studyskills/mindmap/samplel ecture.html

An Example – A User Guide in the Brain

Another Example – A Mind Map for Project Learning

Using Inspiration

Your Assignment By using Inspiration, draw a mind map according to the following instruction: –Think about a task for your Inquiry-learning project and put it as the main idea of your mind map –Design the process (a series of steps) to help your students to complete the task, link all these steps to the main idea –Link all the generic skills that you think each step can help your students to achieve. A Mind Map for Project Learning as an example Submit your mind map to Moodle before the deadline.
