N. Dixon PH / DT CERN 12 July 20101 Straw Material, weld line latest news and plans

N. Dixon PH / DT CERN 12 July 20102 Material. Status. Tests foreseen + QC. Weld line. Status. Foreseen modifications. Straw storage under pressure. Nipple design. Control in time.

N. Dixon PH / DT CERN 12 July 20103 Coating of PET Fraunhofer successfully coated samples on 7/7/10 RNK 2600 ( coated on non treated side ) 30metres 50nm Cu + 20 nmAu 30metres 100nm Cu + 20 nmAu Melinex 406 30metres 50nm Cu + 20 nmAu 30metres 100nm Cu + 20 nmAu Slitting to follow, and return to CERN week 30

N. Dixon PH / DT CERN 12 July 20104 Tests foreseen + QC Several QC test as specified in EDMS Id: 1079692 Mechanical (all dimensions) Creep test. Bonding Peel of metal coating Bonding of PET to a substrate XPS analysis PermeationMEB In parallel Ultra sonic welding. MEB MEB Tensile test of weld Leak test

N. Dixon PH / DT CERN 12 July 20105 Weld Line Progress made since December 2009 (last visit) Weld line now installed in clean and controlled environment. Drawing mechanism. Forward speed for quality weld. Online microscope control of weld. Not yet completed, or new actions: by SEPTEMBER 2010 Overlap of seem / Seem size. Repeatability. Spool tension device, with active control. Exists but not fitted. Tension to be calibrated as this directly affects tape buckling Pre shaping rollers, to minimise tape buckling. New anvil Design, to be completed + manufacture. Force needed on sonotrode. Needs to be calibrated dead weight. Sonotrode shape design to be a copy of current horn. Ski device to be fitted in front of the fixture. Fixture to be shortened. Metrology of all parts. For assembly and alignment purposes. Clean room working conditions to be followed Traceability of weld campaigns to include date, spool used, weld parameters, T, humidity, quantity produced, tool wear, comments...). All changes occurring on the line to be recorded in a database

N. Dixon PH / DT CERN 12 July 20106 Weld Line Weld line now installed in clean and controlled environment.

N. Dixon PH / DT CERN 12 July 20107 14-Dec-15 S.Movchan Straw manufacturing and QC Seam shape on-line QC by microscope set up weld seam shape

N. Dixon PH / DT CERN 12 July 20108 14-Dec-15 S.Movchan Straw manufacturing and QC 8 Software: seam quality on-line control Each seam photo size is about 8x10 mm2 at zoom x16 and straw production speed of V=9 mm/sec. So we have some frame overlapping of neighbor Photos. File record – set of about 250.bmp photos File processing: - modes: - manual - auto (0.8 sec per frame) -good/bad seam alarm level: - typical is 0.05

N. Dixon PH / DT CERN 12 July 201013 Straw storage under pressure

N. Dixon PH / DT CERN 12 July 201014 Conclusions 14 Weld line needs more work before becoming fully operational. PET research and development appears to be coming to an end. We have solutions JINR / CERN for storage under pressure. We should target a start date for full production in September 2010

N. Dixon PH / DT CERN 12 July 201015 JINR nipple solutions follow First presented in Dubna 7/7/10 by V. Elsha, T. Enik

N. Dixon PH / DT CERN 12 July 201016 Manufacturing end plugs for straw Dubna 07.2010 V. Elsha, T. Enik

N. Dixon PH / DT CERN 12 July 201017 Manufacturing end plugs is necessary for long term leakage test of the straw in storage time under pressure One of two end plug should be possibly inside of the straw for easy mounting because overpressure in the straw is useful for mounting straw to frame Was tested three types of end plugs which may be used in different combination All of them seems to be suitable Final choice will be complete with sufficient production statistic V. Elsha, T. Enik Dubna 07.2010

N. Dixon PH / DT CERN 12 July 201018 1.Filled end plug 1 2 3 V. Elsha, T. Enik Dubna 07.2010 Polymerization should be finished with straw in vertical position.

N. Dixon PH / DT CERN 12 July 201019 2.Filled end plug with nipple Preparation of the cap V. Elsha, T. Enik Dubna 07.2010 1 2 3 These are the same processes like previous

N. Dixon PH / DT CERN 12 July 201020 3. Pumping of the straw 1 2 3 V. Elsha, T. Enik Dubna 07.2010 Cut off thick part is good for mounting over pressured straw Polymerization should be finished under pressure

N. Dixon PH / DT CERN 12 July 201021 4. Filled Internal end plug V. Elsha, T. Enik Dubna 07.2010 Stycast 1266 3 On the another side of the straw should be nipple plug

N. Dixon PH / DT CERN 12 July 201022 5.Nipple from pneumatic tyre Mechanical treatment is necessary Gluing Pumping Leakage water test Max. leakage is 4 mm 2 /day for 1 of 4 straw V. Elsha, T. Enik Dubna 07.2010

N. Dixon PH / DT CERN 12 July 201023 Conclusion End plugs filled in cap: + seems to be reliable compacting - need high room for vertical polymerizations - need additional cutting operation End plug filled on silicone: + inside of the straw (low diameter) - need high room for vertical polymerizations - compacting depend on adhesion End plug glued to straw: + There is possibility easy adjust pressure in the straw - Need mechanical treatment - High weight and cost V. Elsha, T. Enik Dubna 07.2010
