Language of Statistics

 Systematically collect, organize, and describe data  Construct, read and interpret tables, charts and graphs  Make inferences and convincing arguments that are based on data analysis  Develop an appreciation for statistical methods as powerful means for decision making

 In applying statistics to a scientific, industrial, or societal problem, it is necessary to begin with a population or process to be studied. Populations can be diverse topics such as "all persons living in a country". A population can also be composed of observations of a process at various times, with the data from each observation serving as a different member of the overall group. Data collected about this kind of "population" constitutes what is called a time series. populationtime series  For practical reasons, a chosen subset of the population called a sample is studied — as opposed to compiling data about the entire group (an operation called census). Once a sample that is representative of the population is determined, data is collected for the sample members in an observational or experimental setting. This data can then be subjected to statistical analysis, serving two related purposes: description and inference.samplecensusexperimental

 Do you think these stats are taking from a sample or a census?  Did they ask you?

 Who is keeping these statistics?  Corporations who want to sell you their product  Government and Schools  Doctors and Health care providers  Psychologist  Sports

 WhAt Do yOu MeAn??? Lol!

Define the following basic tools of statistics: Range- the difference between the highest and lowest pieces of data Median-once data is ordered it is the middle piece of data Mode-the number or numbers that occur most often Mean-add the values of each piece of data then divide by how many total pieces of data there are

 In you own words, explain the meaning and the purpose of statistics and how it involves the collecting, organizing and interperating of data.  Give a personal example of how statistics have influences you or your family at some time in your life.

 Generate a list of real life times and events that require the use of statistics in the making decisions and/or reporting results. Compare and contrast any two of these items on your list.
