3 Course Outline  Week Two  Cell Theory and Types of Cells  Structure of a cell, Plant Cells and Animal Cells  Organelles, Cellular Transport, Cell Reproduction  Photosynthesis and Plant Cells  Week Three  DNA and Genetics, Mendel  DNA and Genetics, Evolution  Kingdoms  Viruses and Bacteria

4 Keeping UP  We will be covering a large amount of information in a short period of time  The goal is to give you a quick background and some fundamental information  There will be a lot of reading out side of class from the textbook, a practice that will get you through high school and college, not to mention life!

5 Project  PowerPoint presentation  Optional poster project…  One topic that we cover or do not cover from the textbook or something you have a personal interest in.  Needs to be approved by me  Do some research, use the internet  Good sources vs. bad sources  Use the textbook

6 Project  Presentation needs to be about 8-10 minutes long  Translates into 10-15 slides  Cover an area of Biology that you find interesting  You will present to the class for a grade  You will present to the class for a grade  3 sub topics or main points will help you organize your presentation

7 Topics  Anything you see on the syllabus  Page viii or the Content pages  Careers  Animals, Plants, Bugs, Critters  Human biology  Cells  PICK A TOPIC BY THIS THURSDAY!

8 Biology  Study of living organisms  What is “living”?  Justify why this candle is “living”  Justify why it isn’t “living”

9 Science of Observation  The six week observation lab…  Put your NAME, BIOLOGY, SUMMER 2010, on the front of your composition book.  On the first page and every page to follow Date:Day: One Diagram: Observations:

10 Your Textbook Take a look… Describe some of the characteristics that make up a science text… How is it different from a novel or other type of printed material?
