6 © 2009 THE EDUCATION TRUST What OUSD Students Are Saying We could do more, if more was asked of us Some concern about being prepared for college All want to go to college Counselors – need more; better communication All students need information on what it takes to go to college and get the information early (start in middle school)

7 © 2009 THE EDUCATION TRUST What OUSD Students Are Saying Good teachers care and have high expectations of the students, push the students, know that the students can do the work Question the effectiveness of advisory periods There are no opportunities for students to take summer school for advancement. There are very limited opportunities for students to make up courses. Students also concerned about the lack of parental involvement. All students should take college prep (UC a-g) courses so they have the choice of going to college

8 © 2009 THE EDUCATION TRUST What OUSD Parents Said Mandate that all children entering high school have to be on track with the A-G curriculum, the parents and students sign off, getting information showing how the A-G track works Most teachers really want to help their kids

9 © 2009 THE EDUCATION TRUST What OUSD Parents Said Concerned about grades Want improved communication with school and teachers Want to increase parental involvement Need more and better information about what it takes to get into college Rigor is important! Make sure kids are prepared

10 © 2009 THE EDUCATION TRUST What OUSD Teachers Said Good blend of students, different ethnic groups, including international diversity Good programs, activities, opportunities for students, e.g. Academies, athletics, clubs Most believe students have the ability to go to college Concern about the lack of skills students enter high school Unclear about district’s vision Would like to see more parent and community involvement

11 © 2009 THE EDUCATION TRUST What OUSD Teachers Said Teachers need more information on college and careers Try to build positive relationships with their students All students should be exposed to rigorous curriculum Teachers have to have consistent and high expectations Concerned about the evaluation/observation process Need focused, coherent professional development
