Periodic Table of Elements
Jacqulyn Parsons

Discovery In 1869, Dmitri Mendeleev organized the chemical elements into a periodic table similar to the one we use today. He had the elements in order based on the atomic mass. Today we have them in order based on the atomic number.

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE

EACH ELEMENT Each element is organized within the table based on its Atomic Number. But a lot of important information is given too. Atomic Mass Atomic Number Element Symbol Element Name

Details! Details! Details!
Atomic Mass = # of Protons + # of Neutrons Atomic Number = # of Protons and # of Electrons Symbol = Make sure to pay attention it isn’t always the first letters of element. Ex. Lead – Pb Element Name

ORGANIZATION The Periodic Table of Elements is organized in many different ways. Group Period Family

Group Groups The atoms of all elements in the same column are considered a group. This means they have the same number of outer-shell electrons. Remember Groups go across the top! 1 through 18

Period Period: The atoms of all elements in the same row are considered a period. This means they contain the same number of atomic shells. Remember Periods go top to bottom. Numbered 1 through 7

Family Elements are also grouped by family. These are elements with similar chemical properties. Noble Gases Halogens Alkaine Earth Alkail Metals Transition Metals Basic Metals Semi Metals Non Metals Lanthanides Actinides
