2 In your Outliers text, identify the areas of the text that refer to the Korean Air crash, the Avianca crash, mitigated speech, American communication and Power Distance Index descriptions. Write a 2-3 sentence description of each topic.  What happened in the Korean Air crash?  What happened in the Avianca crash?  What is mitigated speech and who uses it?  How is American communication described?  What is the Power Distance Index and which countries are in the high and low categories? 4 Fishbowl Etiquette  Each student is responsible for participating in the fishbowl process. On the next slide you will see the discussion questions; look over the questions and decide which ones you want to discuss with your peers.  Each student is responsible for adding at least four thoughtful pieces of commentary to the discussion. You may enter the discussion as many times as you wish, however every student needs to participate in at least two discussion topics. No hogging a topic!  Each student is responsible for taking notes on at least four of the discussion topics. Notes can include questions, ideas that you like or disagree with, something that you find interesting, etc. You must have at least four notes for each discussion topic. Bullet points are ok.

Under what circumstances do you do this? 5.Which is considered to be “stronger” direct or indirect communication? Why? 6.What role does culture or race play in the way we communicate with people of the same culture and different cultures than ourselves? 7.What are some solutions to solve cultural and gender communication issues?

7 Write a one paragraph response to this prompt: Who is responsible for making meaning out of a message; the speaker or the listener? Activity 1: Quickwrite

10 Activity 4: ½ page response Choose one of the topics on the handout and write a ½ page response in your classwork. You may refer directly to your Tannen article.

11 Activity 5: Explaining Communication Styles Choose one particular communication pattern and discuss what you mean by that form of communication. Base your explanation on the examples you provided from the texts and elaborate on those examples to make your point. Write a succinct and concise paragraph that explains the style of communication.
