Mathematics National Curriculum Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering and necessary for financial literacy in most forms of employment. A high quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the power and beauty of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

4. New National Curriculum for Maths In September 2013 the UK introduced a new curriculum for mathematics in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. There are three main aims that the curriculum would like to instil into your child’s education: To become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics To reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry To solve problems by applying their mathematics

5. New National Curriculum for Maths What do these aims mean? Fluent in the fundamentals: there are some things that pupils just need to know. E.g days of the week, doubles of numbers or up to 12 times tables. These are taught frequently throughout the year using mathematical language. Reason Mathematically: pupils are able to give their ideas/strategies on how to solve a calculation or problem using mathematical language. Solve problems: pupils are equipped with a number of resources, both physical and mental to allow them to solve problems, they are confident enough to try and break down a problem and use alternative methods, rather than simply give up.

6. The Main Changes Whilst the curriculum remains largely the same, there are some important changes to note: Some areas that were previously thought of as Secondary school topics are now introduced into the primary curriculum Some topics are taught earlier in the primary curriculum A few new elements have been added to the curriculum

7. The Main Changes Key Stage 1 – Years 1 and 2 The principle focus of mathematics teaching KS1 is to ensure that pupils develop confidence and mental fluency with whole numbers, counting and place value. This will involve working with numerals, words and the four operations, using practical resources.

8. The Main Changes Key Stage 2 – Years 3 and 4 The principle focus of mathematics teaching in lower KS2 is to ensure that pupils become increasingly fluent with whole numbers and the four operations, including number facts and place value. This ensures efficient written and mental methods are developed. Key Stage 2 – Years 5 and 6 The principle focus of mathematics teaching KS1 is to ensure that pupils extend their understanding of the number system and place value to include larger integers. This develops the pupils’ connections between multiplication and division with FDP and ratios.

9. The Tall Tower You have been imprisoned at the top of the Tall Tower by the Wicked Magician! You can get out by climbing down the ladders. As you come down you collect useful spells. You can go down the ladders and through the doorways into the adjoining room but you cannot go into the same room twice, nor climb up the ladders. The numbers in the rooms show how many spells there are in each one. Which way should you go to collect the most spells? And which way to collect as few as possible? Can you find a route that collects exactly 35 spells?
