1 From the Mahabharata

2 9. King’s Personality Dedicated, trustworthy, determined, intelligent, caring, loyal 10. Hawk’s Persoanlity Arrogant, not very smart (gets facts wrong), persistent, dedicated 11. What does the king offer the hawk instead of the dove? A feast! Hawk thinks the King’s food is trash (spice, seasoning, and fire ruin it) 12.What will the hawk accept as “the next best thing”? Warm flesh equal to the weight of the dove

3 13. What happened after Sibi kept his word? He cut his flesh from his thighs  ended up sacrificing his whole body to equal the weight. The hawk turned into Indra, and the dove turned into the god of fire. Sibi passed the test the gods had given him by fulfilling his dharma as king. 14. Why was Sibi so protective of the bird? It was his duty as king to protect all creatures in his kingdom. 15. How were the king and the hawk alike? Both believed they were doing what was right as part of their dharma. (King  protect creature AND Hawk  Protect family)

4  Teach a lesson  Righteous behavior will be rewarded  Hindus believe in their gods and the afterlife  Pass down cultural traditions  Dharma (Hindu belief each caste has a duty to fulfill)  Keep promise even if the circumstance changes
