The Coronation of Queen Victoria. On 20 June 1837, William IV died and Victoria became Queen at the age of 18. Her coronation was held at Westminster Abbey on 28 June 1838. This is the Queen’s crown. She only wears it on special ceremonies, like the State opening of Parliament. The diamond in front of the crown is the biggest diamond in the world.

Date of marriage: on February 10, 1840 Victoria married her 20-year-old cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, who gave in 1857 the title of Prince consort “A marriage is no amusement but a solemn act, and generally a sad one”.

The future of the Monarchy Victoria had 9 children, 40 grand-children and 37 great-grandchildren. The Prince of Wales, who is standing to the left of his mother, would become King Edward VII following her death in January 1901. His son, the Duke of York acceded to the throne as King George V in 1910, and the young Prince Edward, shown here aged 5 years old, would become King Edward VIII in 1936.

Her parents are Edward, Duke of Kent and Princess Victoria Mary Louisa of Saxe-Saalfeld-Coburg. 1820 - Princess Victoria’s father dies in January and she becomes heir to the throne. 1832 - Princess Victoria goes on a Royal tour of Wales. 1837 - King William IV dies on 20 June and Princess Victoria becomes Queen. 1838 - Queen Victoria’s Coronation takes place at Westminster Abbey.

1839 - Queen Victoria becomes engaged to her cousin, Prince Albert. 1840 - The wedding of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert takes place on 10 February in the Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace. 1850 - Prince Arthur is born. 1849 - Queen Victoria and Prince Albert make their first official visit to Ireland. 1851 - The Great Exhibition takes place at Crystal Palace at London, celebrating art, science, trade and industry. The Exhibition was the idea of Prince Albert. 1852 - Balmoral Castle is purchased, after being leased by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert since 1848. 1853 - Prince Leopold is born. 1857 - The Royal couple have their ninth child, Princess Beatrice. 1857 - The Royal couple have their ninth child, Princess Beatrice.. 1877 - Queen Victoria makes her first major public appearance since the death of Prince Albert when she attends the State Opening of Parliament.

1887 - Queen Victoria is given the title Empress of India. 1897 - The Golden Jubilee (50 years) of Queen Victoria’s reign is celebrated. A service of thanksgiving takes place on 21 June at Westminster Abbey. 1901 - Queen Victoria celebrates her Diamond Jubilee and sixty years as Queen. Queen Victoria dies at Osborne House on 22 January at the age of 81 and a reign of almost 64 years. She is buried in the Frogmore Mausoleum at Windsor next to Prince Albert.
