3 Launching the Crusades Timeline 1071 – Seljuk Turks defeat the Byzantine army at the Battle of Manzikert March 1095 – Envoys from the Byzantine Emperor Alexius Comnenus ask Pope Urban II for military aid. 27th November 1095 – Pope Urban II launches the First Crusade at the Council of Clermont. 1095 – The People’s Crusade departs for the Holy Land. 1096 – Papal letters sent out across Europe calling for holy war. 1096 – The crusader armies set out from Europe.

6 1 st Crusade Jul 15, 1099: Godfrey breaches the walls of Jerusalem near Herod's Gate; The First Crusaders capture the Holy City of Jerusalem.
