What is the YRBS?? The YRBS is the Youth Risk Behavior Survey. It is given every 2 years (since 1991) by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) to a random sampling of High School students in all 50 states. Survey results are ANONYMOUS and CONFIDENTIAL and are used simply to track the priority health risk behaviors established during youth

What are “priority risk behaviors”? Priority health-risk behaviors are behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among youth and adults. They often are established during childhood and adolescence, extend into adulthood, and are interrelated and preventable.

What ARE the 6 priority risk behaviors??  Intentional/unintentional injuries  Tobacco Use  Alcohol and other Drug Use  Sexual Activity  Dietary Behavior  Physical Activity

Why were these beahviors selected? Among people age 5-24, approximately 72% of ALL DEATHS are attributed to FOUR causes ! #1 Automobile Accidents (30%) #2 Homicide (16%) #2 Homicide (16%) #3 Other Accidents (15%) #3 Other Accidents (15%) #4 Suicide (11%) #4 Suicide (11%)

In addition… Approx. 1,000,000 teenage girls get pregnant each year 86% of all STDs occur in people age 15-24 1 in 5 people with AIDS are between 20-29, therefore they contracted the virus HIV when they were in their teens.
