6. 6 EU 2020 The EUROPE 2020 strategy replaces the Lisbon Strategy as the EU’s 10 year Economic plan. There are three main priorities to the new Europe 2020 strategy: –SMART GROWTH - developing an economy based on knowledge and innovation. –GREEN GROWTH - promoting a sustainable and competitive economy –INCLUSIVE GROWTH - fostering a high-employment economy delivering social cohesion

7. 7 What is ERDF? The European Union provides €583.6 million for Yorkshire and the Humber to invest in the region by 2015. The money, from one of Europe's Structural Funds - the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), is provided to boost the region's economic performance, investing to increase innovation, competitiveness and employment. The ERDF programme's strategy identifies three broad priorities for investment for the region.

8. 8 Priority One Promoting Innovation and Research & Development This will foster innovation in organisations through the exchange, sharing, and exploitation of new knowledge and technology. It will inspire more research and development and assist organisations to continually innovate through new products and processes, new organisational changes and marketing methods.

9. 9 Priority Two Stimulating and Supporting Successful Enterprise Promotes a more entrepreneurial culture and creates a supportive environment for SME's (including social enterprises and new businesses). It will foster the creation of new firms and will offer assistance to them. It will create a culture promoting best practice in management, innovation, motivation and improved links between enterprise and education.

10. 10 Priority Three Developing Sustainable Communities Will facilitate better connectivity between people, places and economic opportunities. It will make the link between strategies for economic growth and social inclusion, and it will achieve this by focussing interventions where they are needed most.

11. 11 Cross Cutting Themes Cross Cutting Themes are required by the European Commission because Environmental Good Practice, Equalities and Diversity are essential aspects of making economic and social progress throughout Europe.
