Status of LS1 collimator maintenance O. Aberle – 03/03/14 With input from P. Bestmann, S. De Man and J. Lendaro

Main activities during the LS1  Collimator exchange (TCTP vs TCT, IR 1, 2, 5 and 8)  Collimator installation (TCLP, TCL6 in IR1 and 5)  New TCAPD (IR 3)  New installation commissioning  Collimator standard maintenance  Special maintenance  TIM / Robot intervention/observations  Alignment  Outlook March 03rd 20142O. Aberle – CWC

Collimator exchange  New production of 16 + 4 TCTP  New production of 2 + 1 TCSP  New production of 2 + 1 TCAPD  Preparation of 2 spare TCLP  Preparation of 1 spare TCP  Layout modification in Pt. 8, removal of 2 TCTVB, shifting TCLIA  Pt. 1: Replacement of 4 TCT + by 4TCTP + installation of 2 TCLP and 2 TCT  Pt. 2: Replacement of 2 TCT + 2 TCLP by 4 TCTP  Pt. 3: Installation of 2 new TCAPD  Pt. 5: Replacement of 4 TCT + by 4TCTP + installation of 2 TCLP and 2 TCT  Pt. 6: Replacement of 2 TCS by 2 TCSP  Pt. 7: Remove first TCP on the right side and the three TCP on the left side during ventilation door installation (to prevent damage) and exchange the skewed TCP of IR7L (water cooling)  Pt. 8: Replacement of 2 TCT + 2 TCTVB by 4 TCTP March 03rd 20143O. Aberle – CWC

New installation commissioning  Check each collimator mechanics and electronics.  Full check of controll system  Slot and infrastructure (support, cabling, cooling water)  Installation and alignment  Vacuum connection and bake-out  Collimator standard maintenance March 03rd 20144O. Aberle – CWC

Collimator standard maintenance  Check each collimator mechanics and electronics.  Cycle from out to in, to anti-collision and back to out.  Check 5 th axis for clearance  Check water cooling flow  Check temperature sensors  Check switches, LVDT’s, resolvers, motors and drivers  Map sound profile for each collimator  Check rails  Check roller screws March 03rd 20145O. Aberle – CWC

Collimator roller screw replacement (2011-12) March 03rd 20146 Dust and debris in the end cap and the housing Some dry screws regreased Up to date 3 rollers screws have been exchanged. -No linear bearing -2 LVDT‘s -1 motor -2 switches O. Aberle – CWC

TIM and Robot intervention March 03rd 20147  Sound inspection of the collimators done with the TIM in S34 (23/24 April 2012).  Visual and acoustic inspections with camera can be useful in the future (TIM automatically, Telemax robot more flexible).  Vacuum disconnection testing with the Telemax robot on-going.  Use of robot for visual inspections/leak tests (He spray).  Profit from the long shutdown to verify the integration and do some hardware tests to confirm the procedures. O. Aberle – CWC

Alignment March 03rd 20148  Survey is working in the whole machine.  During smoothing, magnets will be aligned and collimators checked (and adjusted if needed).  IR 3 and IR 7 are equipped with additional targets for remote verification with the stretched wire.  New collimators (TCTP, TCSP, TCLP, TCT (TCL6) and TCAPD) will be aligned.  The TCP’s removed during the installation of the ventilation doors + the skewed TCP in IR7L to be checked (high radiation levels, how much deviation can be tolerated?). O. Aberle – CWC

Schedule – linked to LS1 LHC planning March 03rd 2014O. Aberle – CWC11  Work has just started  First ring collimators put back into operational status TCLA.7L3.B2, TCP.6L3.B1, TCSG.5L3.B1  A lot of work in parallel with surface preparation and installation activities.  J. Finelle from the vacuum team will take pictures when ever a collimator will be disconnected from the vacuum system.  All collimators will be checked for alignment errors, re- alignement has already started in several points.

Outlook March 03rd 201412  Improve the sound and image quality for the TIM, very powerful tool for the future.  Investigate on the capabilities of the Telemax or similar robots for inspections and interventions.  Reference sound recording of all collimators?  Improve the accessibility to the screw (cap) (Phase 2!)  A regular check during long breaks and shut-downs with re-lubrication of the screw.  Check every slot for 5 th axis motion limitations.  Sven De Man is the new reference person for the LHC tunnel situation concerning collimators O. Aberle – CWC
