7 NONRENEWABLE AND RENEWABLE RESOURCES

8 NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES A nonrenewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be re-made or re-grown at a scale comparable to its consumption.

9 NUCLEAR ENERGY Nuclear fission uses uranium to create energy. Nuclear energy is a nonrenewable resource because once the uranium is used, it is gone!

10 COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GAS Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are considered nonrenewable because they can not be replenished in a short period of time. These are called fossil fuels.

24 Task for today:  Look up your resource on the internet.  Answer the following questions: 1. What is this energy source? Where can we find it? 2. How do we harness the energy? (How does it work?) 3. Are there different types or uses of this source? If yes, what are the differences? 4. What are the environmental impacts of your energy source? 5. What are the economic impacts of your energy source? How much does it cost per kWh? 6. What countries currently use this source? What percentage is used in the United States? 7. How is this energy source currently used? For example: At farms, in industry etc. Could this source be used in a family home?

Most of the city’s reclaimed water is used for agricultural irrigation, landscaping, dust control, and recharging the aquifer. About 3.2 million gallons per day are reused.  What is an environmental benefit of using reclaimed waste water?
