7 H. Laakso, SERENA - HEWG meeting, Mykonos, Greece, 8-11 June 2009  Open P/L procurement issues:  Solutions to be addressed without delay  Firm up and finalise P/L experiment interface definition for H/W phase:  Partly achieved, but still missing elements  Consolidation to be addressed without delay  P/L accommodation and local interfaces to be confirmed and detailed:  Ongoing activity, as part of PDR with minor adjustments only  H/W phase comes upon us, and requires significant more attention to detailed work and close interaction and reporting  In view of the above and the observed IPDR results:  Please stop “nice-to-have” optimisation dreams  Keep momentum and intensify P/L work  Adopt the “Yes We Can” attitude – also we got to get out of a crisis ! MPO Payload Priorities

8 H. Laakso, SERENA - HEWG meeting, Mykonos, Greece, 8-11 June 2009  The Critical Equipment Review was held between September-December 2008  Critical technological elements were reviewed  Highly useful exercise and confirmed many technologies that are not considered critical any more  Some remained open and were further studied in spring 2009, such as solar arrays, antenna pointing mechanism and wave guide  The CER board met on 18 December 2008  Recommended to start the PDR activity  Recommended that Collocation Meeting should be organized only after the test results on the solar array are available  Gave critical notes on the mass traceability and maturity of technology for solar array, antenna pointing mechanism and waveguides Critical Equipment Review - 2008

9 H. Laakso, SERENA - HEWG meeting, Mykonos, Greece, 8-11 June 2009  The PDR Kick-Off was held on 10 March  The CER Board provided guidance to the review team and recommendations on work by the Prime before collocation  The SPC Tracking Committee follows the PDR and advises the SPC  Major items were:  Overall mass budget with increasing trend remains a major concern (10% margin!)  S/W and AOCS complexity and development schedule  AIV (accessibility of equipment, schedule)  Solar Array  Contamination risk by thruster plumes  Collocation meeting with Astrium on 4 – 7 May  The PDR Board meeting on 29 May PDR Activities and Issues

10 H. Laakso, SERENA - HEWG meeting, Mykonos, Greece, 8-11 June 2009  Preliminary draft recommendations of the PDR board are not yet public  The PDR Board recognized significant development accomplished during the past 12 months  The board believes strongly that BepiColombo will fly  Solar arrays are adequate for the Mercury environment and are currently tested for at 200 C for 10 000 hrs at 230 C for 5 000 hrs  The results confirmed the expectations of solar cell aging  The PDR Board will reconvene in September to discuss the remaining key issues, such as mass and solar array  Final PDR meeting in November is for closing the RIDs and AIs  The BepiColombo CaC needs to be confirmed after the summer in order to issue the SPC paper in September for the SPC meeting on 2 October 2009 PDR Results

11 H. Laakso, SERENA - HEWG meeting, Mykonos, Greece, 8-11 June 2009  Manufacturing of STM is in final stage at JAXA, test preparations on-going  Tests on EM are on-going  On-board S/W requirements review completed  Launcher coupled load analysis confirmed acceptable notching profile  Characterization tests of thermal hardware and solar cells are on-going  Issue: Solar array appears to have too little margin to cover UV degradation, temperature uncertainties and modified cosine law. Addition of one solar cell string is under consideration (MMO height increase of 16 cm) MMO Status
