Bell work 11/3/15 Write the question, answer, and justify!

Bell work 11/3/15

Student Learning Objectives EQ: Do I recognize that all matter consists of atoms? (SPI0807.9.1) EQ: Can I use the Periodic Table to identify properties of elements? (SPI 0807.9.9) TOC: #41. Electron Shells Foldable #42. Drawing an Atom #43. Element Research

# Electron Shells Foldable Materials: Foldable & 3 colored pencils or 3 markers. 1 st level holds only 2 electrons. 1 st level must be full to move on to level 2. Use a color pencil to shade the first shell. EQ: Do I recognize that all matter consists of atoms? (SPI0807.9.1) EQ: Can I use the Periodic Table to identify properties of elements? (SPI 0807.9.9) This is a Bohr Diagram.

Electron Shells Foldable 2 nd level can hold only 8 electrons. 2 nd level must be full to move to level 3 Add 8 electrons. One at a time clock- wise until you have 4 pairs. Shade in shells 1 and 2. EQ: Do I recognize that all matter consists of atoms? (SPI0807.9.1) EQ: Can I use the Periodic Table to identify properties of elements? (SPI 0807.9.9)

Electron Shells Foldable 3rd level hold up to 18 electrons. 3 rd level must be full to move to the 4 th and so on. Add the 18 electrons. Shade in levels 1, 2 and 3. EQ: Do I recognize that all matter consists of atoms? (SPI0807.9.1) EQ: Can I use the Periodic Table to identify properties of elements? (SPI 0807.9.9)

# Drawing an Atom 8 O Oxygen 16.00 1. EQ: Do I recognize that all matter consists of atoms? (SPI0807.9.1) EQ: Can I use the Periodic Table to identify properties of elements? (SPI 0807.9.9) Materials: Shell diagrams Felt balls (electrons) SNB/ handout Periodic Table We will work together to complete the first 2 on your handout.

Drawing an Atom 3 Li Lithium 6.94 2. EQ: Do I recognize that all matter consists of atoms? (SPI0807.9.1) EQ: Can I use the Periodic Table to identify properties of elements? (SPI 0807.9.9)

Group Work and Connections EQ: Do I recognize that all matter consists of atoms? (SPI0807.9.1) EQ: Can I use the Periodic Table to identify properties of elements? (SPI 0807.9.9) Your group will continue to use the periodic table to find information for numbers 3 and 4 on your handout. Your group will have about 5 minutes to complete the activity. Be sure to use Accountable Talk while you are working in groups. Groups MUST use jobs. This is a GREAT opportunity to earn team points!

EQ: Do I recognize that all matter consists of atoms? (SPI0807.9.1) EQ: Can I use the Periodic Table to identify properties of elements? (SPI 0807.9.9) N=10 P=9 N=14 P=14

Independent Work You will have 3 minutes to complete numbers 5 and 6 independently. If you finish early, double check your math and the placement of your electrons. Look carefully at the Periodic Table for connections between the electrons in each element and the number of shells. EQ: Do I recognize that all matter consists of atoms? (SPI0807.9.1) EQ: Can I use the Periodic Table to identify properties of elements? (SPI 0807.9.9)

EQ: Do I recognize that all matter consists of atoms? (SPI0807.9.1) EQ: Can I use the Periodic Table to identify properties of elements? (SPI 0807.9.9) N=6 P=5 N=18 P=17

Build an Atom App GROUP CHALLENGE! Each group will be challenged to figure out the build an atom as it is displayed on the screen. You can write on your desk with an Expo to figure out the Math if needed. The first group to “buzz in” will get to answer. NO devices allowed! If you answer correctly, your group will get 10 points. If anyone wants to debate their answers (before submitted) and you are correct, you will get the points. Use your group roles! We will only complete as many as time is allowed. EQ: Do I recognize that all matter consists of atoms? (SPI0807.9.1) EQ: Can I use the Periodic Table to identify properties of elements? (SPI 0807.9.9)

Assessment- Plickers Which element from the Periodic Table above has the greatest number of Electrons in it’s outer shell? Be ready to justify. a. Hydrogen (H) b. Lithium (Li) c. Sodium (Na) d. Potassium (K) EQ: Do I recognize that all matter consists of atoms? (SPI0807.9.1) EQ: Can I use the Periodic Table to identify properties of elements? (SPI 0807.9.9)

# Element Research You and a partner at your group will choose an Element. No two elements will be used per class. You may use your device to go to my portaportal for your research. Be sure to use accountable talk while you and your partner are working. You will present your element at the end of class tomorrow. THIS IS WORTH 100 POINTS! Rubric: You MUST have the objectives of the lesson. Element Name Symbol Atomic Number Atomic Mass Protons Neutrons Electrons Bohr Diagram drawing Classification (which Family does your element belong to?) Discovered by? 3 Real- World Uses of your element Presentation EQ: Do I recognize that all matter consists of atoms? (SPI0807.9.1) EQ: Can I use the Periodic Table to identify properties of elements? (SPI 0807.9.9)
