Quick Write “”We did not know what to make of her. In our minds we tried to pin her to a corkboard like a butterfly, but the pin merely went through and away she flew.” How does this video connect with Stargirl and your life? What are some of the ways that Stargirl has influenced others in the novel thus far? Predict ways that she will impact others in the chapters to come. Who or what has had an impact on your life?

Stargirl As we read today, think about a time when you felt you did not fit in. What did you do about it? What can you infer about Stargirl’s feelings?

Warm-Up Thesis Statements Pick a topic below and write a thesis statement for it: Study hall Block scheduling/shorter classes Someone you admire/heroes More choice in electives On-line classes/school

Reading Response and Persuasive Writing EQ: How can I write an essay that engages my reader and me?

Audience Participation So he (the Big Bad Wolf) knocked on the door and said, “Little pig, little pig, let me come in.” To which the pig replied, “No, no, no, not by the hair of my chinny chin chin.” …and the wolf said,” Then I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house in.”

How do I organize my essay?

Persuasive Writing… is any type of writing that attempts to persuade/convince us to adopt a point of view, agree with an opinion, take an action, form a belief etc. It is any type of writing that involves an argument. Examples?

Idea/Argument Prompt: Do you think the Big Bad Wolf from “The Three Little Pigs” is a character to be admired? Idea/Argument: The Big Bad Wolf is not a character to be admired. He shows through his actions that he will lie to get what he wants, that he is a bully and that he is capable of horrendous violence. Evidence (proof) The wolf repeatedly threatens and attempts to intimidate the pigs in their homes. “I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house down.” Interpretation (infer) This threat is meant to terrorize the poor pigs and make them feel unsafe in their homes. The wolf seems to relish scaring and bullying the pigs.

Evidence (proof) The wolf destroys two of the pigs’ properties and in one version of the story he ends up eating both of them. Interpretation (infer) This shows that the wolf is not just a misunderstood victim. He has no problem with killing the other animals and demolishing their homes for his own enjoyment.

Idea/Argument Prompt: Do you think the Big Bad Wolf from “The Three Little Pigs” is a character to be admired? Idea/Argument: The Big Bad Wolf is not a character to be admired. He shows through his actions that he will lie to get what he wants, that he is a bully, and that he is capable of horrendous violence. Evidence (proof) In one version of the text, the wolf tries to befriend the third pig and says that he would like to take him to the farmer’s market the next day and buy him some seeds for his garden. Interpretation (infer) We know that the wolf is not being sincere and that he just wants to get the pig outside so he can eat him. This shows that he will say or do anything including lying in order to get what he wants.

Connections (How do I relate to this?) The wolf’s behavior reminds me of a character named “Cole” in the book we read in this class titled Touching Spirit Bear. Interpretation (infer) Cole, much like the wolf, lies about everything in order to get what he wants. He is involved in many wrongdoings including theft and bullying. Both characters are only concerned with what makes them happy at that moment. Cole also receives consequences for his actions.

Counter Argument Some people may think that the Big Bad Wolf should be admired because of his inventive ways of attempting to lure the three little pigs out of their houses. Clearly, there is more evidence to support that he is not to be admired because of the consequences of his actions.

Extension / Conclusion (What do I take away from this?) From this story, I realized that although this is a fictional tale, the character of the wolf possesses characteristics that many people in the real world have. The wolf is a symbol for the greed and selfishness that have become a part of our society and that should be disregarded or destroyed.

Now it’s your turn Prompt: Is “Stargirl” a character to be admired?
