2 Minute Paper Goal Minute papers can be used to assess student understanding of a topic before proceeding to a new topic or their understanding of a foundation topic. Since the activity only takes a few minutes of class time it can be easily incorporated at the beginning or end of class. This activity provides feedback to the instructor, encourages active participation and demonstrates the instructor’s interest in student comprehension and reactions.

3 Assessment The minute paper topics are application or analysis questions. These questions can be used for formative and summative evaluation.

4 1-minute paper topics o Explain how alternative splicing leads to the vast number of different mRNAs found in eukaryotic cells.

5 1-minute paper topics o Describe the elongation cycle that occurs on the ribosome.

6 1-minute paper topics o How do missense and nonsense mutations differ?

7 1-minute paper topics o What is a transcription bubble? What is happening in the bubble?

8 1-minute paper topics o What is the function of a 3´ poly-A tail?

9 1-minute paper topics o Describe 2 of the main differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic gene expression.
