1. 5 Fundamental principles of government -popular sovereignty -power lies w/people -voting -electoral college -rule of law -law applies to everyone even rulers -limits the power of state & federal government -ex. Article I forbids government spending w/o approval of Congress

-separation of powers -to prevent abuse of power or from one person or group gaining too much power -framers established 3 branches -legislative -executive -judicial -checks and balances -each branch of government is able to check or restrain the power of the other branches

2. Federalism -power is shared by national & state government -independent authority at the same time -people must obey national & state laws

4. Supremacy -Article VI (6) makes the Constitution the “Supreme Law of the Land” -no state or federal law can go against the Constitution
