Trevor Olfert trevor.olfert@lrsd.net Music Software & The MB Textbook Bureau

What is the Manitoba Textbook Bureau? An allotment of money per student that administration receives to spend at their discretion on learning resources. Funds can only be used on items on the Textbook Bureau list: mtbb.mb.ca

What was the process? Categorize the software into: Teacher Tool -teacher would use this program to prep for class Student Tool -student would need access to program to learn or exercise the desired outcome Student Outcome -the learning goal would be to adequately utilize and operate the program

There’s no Apps!?! Inexpensive—go buy them on your own Unreliable—here one day, gone the next No credibility—anyone can make an app Tech Support—Rarely is there any Further Cost Complications—in particular “In App Purchases”

Auralia & Musition Auralia 41 Ear Training topics, divided into 5 topic groups; -Intervals and Scales -Chords -Rhythm -Harmony & Form -Pitch & Melody

Auralia & Musition 34 Theory Training topics, divided into 5 topic groups; -Pitch -Rhythm -Terms & Symbols -Harmony -Instruments

Auralia & Musition The two titles work hand in hand as a teacher tool for student assignments and assessment. Allows for self directed learning (i.e. University Theory Prep) Also allows for compilation of student results into a grade book…etc

Finale vs Sibelius Coke vs Pepsi

Finale & Sibelius Transcription Software -mainly teacher tool for creating print music allowing for transcriptions on a PROFESSIONAL level -plus for Sibelius is it’s connected to the app SCORCH

Finale Printmusic Similar to Finale just scaled down Major differences: -limited to 24 staves -basic sound library—no VST’s -limited multimedia (i.e. no video/mp3 import or export)

Sibelius First Similar to Sibelius just scaled down Major differences: -limited to 16 staves -no instrument transposition button/shortcut -playable scores on Scorch APP -basic sound library—no VST’s -allows for multimedia export (i.e. video/mp3 import/export)

Notion by Presonus Teacher & Student Tool -similar to Sibelius/Finale—but scaled down…way down -it’s strength is in the audio file export, the mixer capabilities, better graphic interface and the easy to use features -IT’S ALSO AN APP….no other notation software is

Mixcraft Teacher & Student Tool -Garage Band for PC -Easy to use recording software with extra to fill in the gaps -loops based recording—using robust sound & FX library -VST compatible

Sonar Teacher & Student Tool -Recording studio software -includes sound libraries/FX library/loop library -bridging the gap between Garageband/Mixcraft to Pro Software like Pro Tools and Cubase -will need external recording devices for optimal performance

Pro Tools Teacher & Student Tool -Pro Level Recording Software -includes sound libraries/FX library -will need external recording devices for optimal performance

Mixcraft—Sonar—Pro Tools -VST Compatible—but that they may be complicated because VST’s are not covered by MTTB -All will need an external recording hardware to fully realize their potential...also not covered by MTTB, but range from a few dollars to thousands.

A Little Advice Buy a title for what it’s known for. No product does everything great All these products do many of the same things, But they don’t do the same things well.

Any further product questions contact Kelly’s Music…they are the main retailor for MTTB Music Software
