L.O: To explore the language choices made in a bank. To become familiar with the mark scheme for Controlled Assessment. Week 3

With your partner, discuss and make a list of all of the terms and words you might hear in a bank. Consider conversations between customers and cashiers, managers and office staff. You have 5 minutes.

New term: Sociolect A distinctive style of speaking particular to a certain group of people. For example, Doctors have their own sociolect when talking about topics unique to them.

Read the example transcript that has been collected by a student. It is a transcribed recording of her father dictating minutes of a meeting. Who is the father talking to and why?

Annotate the text with examples of the following (Some examples may overlap with each other): Jargon (words you completely don’t understand) Specialist lexis (words you understand but are still associated with banks) Sociolect specific to the world of banking Instructions Formal language Modal verbs

Look at the mark scheme you have been given. This is what your teachers and examiners will use to mark your controlled assessment for the spoken language study. Highlight the words that you think are KEY to each band e.g. Band 5 could be ‘perceptive analysis’. What is the top mark you can get?
