2. Occupation Timeline (Early Life)  He entered the EIC Service as a cadet in the Madras Engineers at the age of 20.  He was promoted to a low rank commissioned officer of the Madras Engineers in 19 th June 1791.  He became a Lieutenant in the Madras Engineers in 16 August 1793.

Farquhar’s Contributions to Singapore Socially  The Rat & Centipede Problem -The Problem: There were many rats and centipedes on the island. -The Solution: People who killed the rats and centipedes were rewarded.  The Piracy Problem -The Problem: Many pirates attacked the trading ships. -The Solution: Gunboats disguised as trading ships were sent to destroy the pirate boats.
