2 Comets Comets are cosmic snowballs of frozen gases… Characteristics of Comets… – The core of the comet is made up of dust, ice and other particles… – The coma of the comet is the gaseous atmosphere… – The tail of the comet is gases from the coma being released… – The average size of a comet is of 12 miles in diameter, while the coma can be up to 1 million miles and the tail up to one hundred million…

3 Asteroids Asteroids are small, rocky, metallic figures which float in space… Characteristics of Asteroids: – The make up of asteroids is not really set in stone. Some are completely rocky with icy layers, while others have nickel-iron cores… – The shape of an asteroid is similar to crumbling up a ball of paper… two crumpled papers may look similar, but there will be differences in the jaggedness…

4 Meteorite Meteorites are meteoroids that break through the Earth’s atmosphere without burning up, and then impact the surface of the Earth, and survives the impact… Characteristics of Meteoroids: – Are usually very small, but some can get to be massive… – As they enter Earth’s atmosphere the heat of the atmosphere and chemical reactions taking place on the meteorite produce a glowing tail, which is usually referred to as a shooting star…

5 Asteroid Belt The Asteroids Belt is a ring of asteroids located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter… Types of asteroids in the belt: – Carbonaceous: made up of Carbon, and are found along the outer regions of the belt… – S-Types: silicon rich, are found more towards the inner region of the belt… – M-Types: metal rich, they are scattered throughout the asteroid belt…

6 Kuiper Belt The Kuiper Belt is a collection of asteroids that extend beyond our planets… It is much larger than the asteroid belt, and most of the asteroids that make it up are composed of rock and metal…

12 The Gas Giants Gas giants are planets composed of mostly gas, except for their cores which are spinning balls of liquid compounds and heavy metals. Gas planets are usually larger and further from the sun. for example Jupiter, Neptune, Saturn and Uranus are all gas giants. The gas giants have very cold atmospheres do to their distance from the sun, and are usually accompanied by many Satellites and ring systems.

13 Terrestrial planets There are four terrestrial planets in our solar system. Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, and like the gas giants they share certain qualities. Terrestrial planets are composed mostly of rock and metals, with liquid core of mostly iron, which is covered by a mantle. The terrestrial planets also tend to be much smaller, and are accompanied by few to no satellites. Mars is known as the red planet.

14 The Earth The earth is the third planet from the sun, and just happens to be the only one able to support life. The earth is the largest terrestrial planet, and is accompanied by a single moon. The earth is composed of a liquid iron core, a mantle and a crust which is 70% covered by water. Earth is known as the blue planet.

15 The sun is actually a star, and thanks to the solar radiation it gives off life in our solar system is possible. The sun is immense in size dwarfing even Jupiter the largest of the planets, and is made up of molten metal. Some patches on the suns surface are cooler which causes them to darken, producing a sun spot. A tall tale about sun spots is that they affect electronics on earth.

20 Solar system Solar system - the Sun and all the planets, satellites, asteroids, meteors, and comets that are subject to its gravitational pull The Solar System includes four terrestrial planets and four gas giants.

21 Planet types Terrestrial planets- is a planet that is composed of primarily silicate rocks or metals. Gas giants - is a large planet that is made mostly of rock or other solid matter. There are four gas giants in our solar system: Jupiter, Saturn Uranus and Neptune.

22 The sun The Sun is the star in the center of our Solar System. It has a diameter of about 1,392,684 km, about 109 times that of Earth. Photosphere- The luminous envelope of a star from which its light and heat radiate. The part of the sun that is visible.

28 Rotation Planets (a celestial body moving in an elliptical orbit around a star) rotate around the sun in an Elliptic orbit around the sun because of the gravitational interactions between planets and the Sun. The planets rotate counter-clockwise direction.

29 Asteroid belt The asteroid belt is a belt of asteroids that orbit around the sun. They are thought to be created when all the planets were forming and chunks of rock get ripped off of planets in formation. The asteroid belt contains billions — maybe even trillions — of asteroids. The asteroid belt was discovered in 1801.

30 The sun The sun is very important to all the planets. It brings heat to Earth and sustains life on Earth. The gravitational pull keeps all the planets in orbit.

31 Telescopes The Hubble telescope is the most powerful telescope on Earth.
