2 Intro to Squids Invertebrate = no backbone Belongs to the class Cephalopoda –Head-footed –Brain is right above the tentacles with the heart and digestive system at the top –Includes cuttlefish and octopus Carnivores Ranges from size of thumb nail to 20 meters long Squid Video

4 Squid External Structure Beak = ripping apart meat Tentacles Mantle = takes in and ejects water from a siphon to help the squid move Chromatophores = cells with pigment for color change Color change cuttlefish videoColor change cuttlefish video

5 Squid Internal Structure Ink sac = releases ink for defense Gills 3 Hearts = 1 main heart & a heart near each of the 2 gills Pen = internal shell providing support

10 External Structures You will work with your lab partner to identify the external structues. DO NOT OPEN THE BAG with your squid in it…we will deal with that mess tomorrow. Put your names on the bag so you get the same one tomorrow. You should be able to complete the following sections of Part 1: –3, 4, 5, 6, 7 At the end of class, put your squid back (which should still be in the sealed bag) into the 5 th period box. If you finish early, read through the procedure for tomorrow so you can get started right away!
