Chapter 4 ~ Responses to Living Things

Chapter 4 ~ Responses of Living Things *Decorate a cover page ~ Use color* *Next Page* Lesson 1 Vocabulary environment- external stimulus- internal stimulus- response- stimulus-

Reacting to the Environment Using the Senses All living things react to their surroundings, or environment. We use our SENSE ORGANS –Eyes –Ears –Nose –mouth –skin

Stimulus is anything that causes a living thing to react The reaction to a stimulus is the response (effect) StimulusResponse 1. Cold wind on you shiver/put on a sweater 2. 3. 4. 5.

Animals, like us use their senses to detect stimuli Plants DO NOT HAVE SENSES, but they DO react to stimuli –They grow toward light –Wilt when they need water –Leaves change color and drop in autumn

Other Sense Organs Some animals send out sound waves that bounce off objects in the environment and travel back. This is called ECHOLOCATION. –Bats and dolphins use this Moths can detect the sound waves of a bat to help it stay alive Crayfish have hairs that detect movement in the water Crickets have hearing organs on their legs Bees can taste with their antennas, jaws, and front legs Snakes use their tongue to smell Sea otters use their whiskers to detect vibrations in the water

External and Internal Stimuli External stimulus- anything in an organism’s environment that causes it to react List 2 examples Internal stimulus- anything within an organism that causes it to react List 2 examples

Lesson 2 Inherited and Learned Behavior Vocabulary Behavior- Inherited behavior- Instinct- Learned behavior-

*Inherited and Learned Behavior* InheritedLearned * does not need to learn *behavior that is taught or learned *Instincts type of behavior *watch others to learn *Migration helps animal * hibernationsurvive

Inherited Behavior- behavior that does not need to be learned –Examples: 1. 2. Learned Behavior- behavior that is learned from an experience *Most animals learn behaviors when they are young –Examples 1. 2.
