The Tripartite Role of Nurse Educators: Teaching, Scholarship, and Service Linda L. Dunn, DSN, RN, CNL Professor As you may recall, you had content in NUR 531 regarding the multiple roles of a nurse educator. However, since that content was covered over a year ago, I felt the need to review some of that content with you as a focused direction for you as you begin your nurse educator practicum. As you know, the faculty role in higher education usually has a tripartite expectation: teaching, scholarship, and service.

2 TEACHING The core responsibility;
Primarily classroom and clinical experiences; May include advising, recruiting, and mentoring. While the core responsibility of the nurse educator is teaching, institutions of higher education tend to adhere to tenure requirements that include significant progress not only in teaching, but scholarship and service. Although teaching in a nursing program focuses primarily on classroom and clinical activities, other teaching responsibilities will include advising, recruiting, and mentoring just to name a few! As you begin this practicum, start early on to develop your portfolio. During this semester you will receive a teaching evaluation from your facilitator that will reflect classroom performance which should be placed in the portfolio. TEACHING

3 Philosophy of teaching…
Revisit the philosophy of teaching that you wrote in NUR 532. Revise this semester as you encounter new knowledge and gain new experiences. Add this to your portfolio. You will find during your tenure of teaching, that your philosophy of teaching will expand. Revisit the philosophy of teaching that you wrote in NUR Revise this document as you gain more knowledge/experience this semester. Then place this in your portfolio as well. Philosophy of teaching…

4 Teaching Competencies
National League for Nurse Educator Competencies Teaching competencies are critical guidelines to follow as you embark on your nurse educator practicum. These competencies include knowledge, skills, and values that are critical to the nurse educator role. The NLN competencies are standards for evaluating teaching competencies, and , therefore, will be used by your facilitator to evaluate your teaching competencies both at midterm and final points of this semester. Teaching Competencies

5 SCHOLARSHIP Research Grant writing Publications Presentations
For some faculty, scholarship gets the least attention. However, scholarship is the foundation by which knowledge is gained for the total faculty role. Let me challenge you to be excited about this rewarding opportunity as you discover new knowledge as well as how you integrate new knowledge into your faculty role. Some of the planned module activities this semester will focus on the area of scholarship. You will be challenged to consider your research focus, search for funding opportunities, consider potential arenas for publication and presentations. SCHOLARSHIP

6 SCHOLARSHIP What do you consider your research trajectory?
Identify three potential funding sources for you research area. Discuss with your facilitator potential resources for grant writing as well as writing for publication. For example, what do you think your research trajectory (focus area) is right now? During the course of this semester brainstorm with your facilitator potential funding sources for your research focus. Have your facilitator help you search for resources at your college in the area of grant writing as well as writing for publication. SCHOLARSHIP

7 SERVICE Activities within and outside the academic setting;
Committee work; Leadership in professional organizations; Professional service to the community. The last aspect of the faculty role is important – especially for the nursing profession as well as your college – because it increases nursing’s visibility in the community, state, region, nation , and internationally. As you work with your facilitator, you will see many areas of service in which he/she is involved. This may include committee assignments in the college as well as the university at large; it may include service out in the community, such as volunteering to serve local organizations (free clinics, jails, speaker’s forum, disaster, etc.). Also, inquire about professional organizations (i.e. NLN or American Nurses Assoc. STTI), but also remember to include specialty groups like research (SNRS), or rural nursing (RNO), or clinical practice (NAACOG, Critical Care, OR, etc.). An important aspect of professional organizations is NOT just membership, but active participation, as an officer. SERVICE

8 SERVICE Professional organizations Professional service
This semester you will have activities built into one of your modules to assist you in considering how you might broaden your service base. Based upon your area of clinical expertise, identify three professional organizations that would best contribute to your professional development. Which would provide you with opportunities for professional service at the regional, national, and/or international level? SERVICE

9 So, in summary, this power point presentation hopefully will stimulate you to review, revise, and rethink about your challenges this semester as you work with your facilitator in completing the modules as well as gaining many new experiences in teaching within the classroom and in clinical. I am excited about the growth opportunities that await each of you in your tripartite role as a nurse educator. Best wishes for much success!! In summary…
