Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), reauthorized and signed by President Bush became No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) Purpose was to create accountability for schools. Wanted “highly qualified teachers and paraprofessionals.” Paraprofessionals should receive appropriate training. 1.Two years of postsecondary education, or existing paraprofessional that passes assessment. 2.Direct supervision of a teacher

Physical environment of the classroom includes arranging desks/furniture, decorations on bulletin boards and wall space, access to and storage for student and teacher materials The classroom décor and arrangement sends a message (values the student, organized and efficient or cluttered, not motivating and uninteresting to students avior in the first place

Different responses to misbehavior depending on the degree of severity (mild to severe, intent, frequency of misbehavior) Focus less on punishment and more on supporting and encouraging appropriate behaviors (recognize & acknowledge good behaviors!) Off-task behavior (like daydreaming) vs. misbehavior (fighting, throwing things) Good classroom management can minimize the likelihood of misbehavior
