TASK 1 (GRADE E) EXTENSION 1 (GRADE D) Use each of the following rules to write down the first five terms of a sequence. Sequences from the nth term (a) 2n + 1 for n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (b) 3n – 2 for n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (c) 5n + 2 for n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (d) n for n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (e) n + 3 for n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 2 2 TASK 2 (GRADE E) Write down the first five terms of the sequence that has as its nth term: (a) n + 3 (b) 3n – 1 (c) 5n – 2 (d) n – 1 (e) 4n + 5 2 n = 1: n = 2: Write out the next five terms of the sequence. EXTENSION 2 (GRADE C) 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 1, 4, 7, 10, 13 7, 12, 17, 22, 27 1, 4, 9, 16, 25 4, 7, 12, 19, 28 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 2, 5, 8, 11, 14 3, 8, 13, 18, 23 0, 3, 8, 15, 24 9, 13, 17, 21, 25 0.6666667778

7 DISCOVERY Effective Participator Self Manager Independent Enquirer Creative Thinker Team Worker Reflective Learner Which ones are you using?PLT Skills LINK BACK TO OBJECTIVES - Accurately find the terms of a sequence given the nth term. What grade are we working at?

8 PLENARY ACTIVITY ASSESSING UNDERSTANDING QUESTION The nth term of a sequence is 3n + 7 The nth term of another sequence is 4n – 2 These two series have only one term that is common and has the same position in the sequence. Without writing out the sequences, show how you can tell, using the expressions for the nth term, that this is the 9th term. Make both expressions for the nth term equal to each other and solve 4n - 2 = 3n + 7 - 3n n - 2 = 7 + 2 n= 9

9 Draw your brain What have you learnt? In your brain, write or draw everything you can remember about calculating missing terms of a sequence when given the nth term. It can be a skill or a reflection, or something else that might be prominent in your brain. What grade are we working at? Where are we in our journey?
