Sustainable Ewaste Management Recycling for Reproduction (R 4 R) Derick Simiyu Khamali Communications Commission of Kenya.

Recycling for Reproduction  WEEE contains valuable and recoverable material.  Recycling helps in recovery of valuable material that can used in producing new products.  Recycling helps in safe disposal of hazardous fractions  E-waste recycling has direct and indirect benefits. It is required regardless of the benefits and challenges.

Recycling for Reproduction  There is need to address the environmental impact contributed by WEEE.  The Composition of EEE carries high quantities of rare and potentially hazardous material.  The recycling process is complex and capital intensive.  There is need for qualified recyclers in terms of personnel and facilities.

Recycling purpose and process  Recycle for a purpose i.e. look for specific components and deliverable.  Proper recycling is done by sorting, dismantling, and recovery of valuable materials  The environmental and social benefits.  R4R leads to diminished demand for virgin raw materials and ease production for new products.

Deposits in the WEEE MINERAL DEPOSITS lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, selenium, chromium, tungsten, titanium, copper, gold, aluminium. NEW PRODUCTIONS a. Customer premise equipment b. ICT and Telecom equipment C. Home Appliances d. Inorganic product formations.

R 4 R Drivers The Manufacturers There must be a deliberate focus to seek reuse of recycled components. There must be deliberate labeling and quantification of reusable components The Recyclers There must be a clear target in the process i.e. what to recover/recycle. There must be market for the end product.

Policy needs for R 4 R Licensing and compliance checks Labeling and quantification. Take back & priority on recycled component Due Diligence in the supply chain. Guide to Manufacturers Specialized or general recyclers Safety and Quality controls Licensing and compliance checks Staff and technical skills. Guide to Recyclers

Procedure of R 4 R Identify the Market for the products. Invest in the recycling plant and systems Recover the product and resale.

Benefits from R 4 R Approach. Streamlined recycling systems Economic gain Environmental Protection Reduced demand for virgin minerals Recycling for Reproduction
