1.What are the units for temperature, air pressure and wind? 2.How are winds named? 3.What is a station model diagram? Journal #9: Weather Measurements

Weather Measurements Objective: Understanding how weather is measured and summarized on a station model diagram.

 Station Model  Model used by scientists to summarize the weather for a certain location at a certain time Weather Measurements

 Wind Stick  Stick used to represent the direction of wind  POINTS IN THE DIRECTION WIND IS COMING FROM Weather Measurements

 Wind Speed  Measured in km/hour or in knots  Represented by feathers  Whole feather = 10 knots  Half feather = 5 knots Weather Measurements

 Cloud Cover  Percentage of cloud cover indicated by the portion of the circle that is darkened Weather Measurements

 Present Weather  Indicated by a symbol on the left side of the station model Weather Measurements

 Visibility  How far ahead you can actually see, in miles Weather Measurements

 Temperature  Upper left corner of the station model  Degrees Fahrenheit Weather Measurements

 Dew Point Temperature  Lower left corner of the station model  Degrees Fahrenheit Weather Measurements

 Precipitation  Lower right hand corner of the station model  Amount of precipitation in the last 6 hours Weather Measurements

 Barometric Pressure  Written in short hand on a station model  RULES:  Take a look at the first number in the pressure  If it is bigger than 5, put a 9 in front of the number  If it is smaller than 5, put a 10 in front of the number  Move the decimal point one place to the left (millibars) Weather Measurements

Barometric Pressure Practice QuestionAnswer 1. 245 2. 781 3. 990 4. 003
