2 History There are several Saints named Valentine in history. All were martyred. Legend: On the evening before Valentine was to be executed, he wrote the first "valentine" card himself, to a girl he loved. It was a note that read "From your Valentine."

3 In the USA People have been exchanging Valentines cards since the mid-1800s. In the second half of the 20th century, people began giving gifts as well. – roses, chocolates, candy, stuffed toys, and jewelry The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately 190 million valentines are sent each year in the US. In some North American elementary schools, children decorate classrooms, exchange cards, and are given candy. – The greeting cards of these students sometimes mention what they appreciate about each other.
