Reflections of a System Run Coordinator Or Equivalent! Bruce M Barnett STFC, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory L1Calo Collaboration Meeting 11-13 January 2010

January 13, 2010B.M. Barnett - STFC/RAL - Heidelberg 2 Woes of a Project Leader Life for a Project Leader isn’t easy: –Has to heard Lions! (not just Cats) –Has to organise people Who don’t want to be organised –Has to give talks at important colateral functions –Has to set up agendas In every agenda –There is a First Talk Project Leader –There is a Final Talk Project Leader –There are all the talks in between The important people who do real work –There is the Penultimate Talk Extremely Dangerous:  You never know what he will say  He will steal your best slides  And he will say something about what you wanted to say … »but probably not quite how you wanted to say it.

January 13, 2010B.M. Barnett - STFC/RAL - Heidelberg 3 What does a System Run Coordinator Do? Represents you at the weekly meetings –Negociates time slots Combined running Calibration –Expresses the opinion of the management Might sneak in one or two of his/her own Keeps track of and schedules system activities –In between beam fills –During “Technical Stops” Coordinates system configuration updates –Calibrations, firmware updates, patches, etc. An “Equivalent to” system run coordinator –Doesn’t know about OTP or OTSMOU

January 13, 2010B.M. Barnett - STFC/RAL - Heidelberg 4 Calorimeter Trigger: Commissioning History Hardware: –2007: Running in ATLAS since M3 (June 2007) –2008: Installation complete  Q1 2008 LTPIs and combined partitions  Q2 2008 Ready for first physics  Q3 2008 –2009 Frequent cosmic running  All L1Calo triggers commissioned and running Regular Wednesday LArg/L1Calo sessions  Refinements of timing  Energy calibration  Noise hunting Firmware consolidation  Algorithms, readout  Studies of problematic channels  Now running combined digital-error free @ 85 kHz Optimized setup  Digital filtering (FIR filters) for “bunch-crossing ID” (BCID) On to REAL Physics!

January 13, 2010B.M. Barnett - STFC/RAL - Heidelberg 5 What is in a Run Report? Summary of configurations –Calibrations –Triggers –Timings –Receiver settings –Bad channel history A look backward –2009 A look forward –2010

January 13, 2010B.M. Barnett - STFC/RAL - Heidelberg 6 But now we have Many Nice Tools

January 13, 2010B.M. Barnett - STFC/RAL - Heidelberg 7 Noise Tracking List of –Disabled and noisy L1Calo Trigger Pre-Processor channels –https://atlas-l1calo.web.cern.ch/atlas-l1calo/cgi-bin/l1cbadchn.cgihttps://atlas-l1calo.web.cern.ch/atlas-l1calo/cgi-bin/l1cbadchn.cgi And Yes Savannah reporting will appear

January 13, 2010B.M. Barnett - STFC/RAL - Heidelberg 8 Rate Monitoring Histories History of individual –Tower rates and –Trigger rates https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/Atlas/LevelOneCaloTriggerRates Calorimeter Week Calo with TRT Trigger Studies

January 13, 2010B.M. Barnett - STFC/RAL - Heidelberg 9 And Many Competent Collaborators Who summarise things: –(Eg, up to run 142195) –http://indico.cern.ch/getFile.py/access?contribId=0&resId=0&materialId=slides&confId=762 72http://indico.cern.ch/getFile.py/access?contribId=0&resId=0&materialId=slides&confId=762 72 So Most information is already accessible through the web or databases directly

January 13, 2010B.M. Barnett - STFC/RAL - Heidelberg 10 What were we Expecting in 2009? And they played the game More or less to plan In fact, better! Beam arrived early …

January 13, 2010B.M. Barnett - STFC/RAL - Heidelberg 14 L1Calo History: Receivers Calibration : –18.11.09 17:05  138746 for Larg  139139 for Tile –20.11.09 10:09  140087 for Larg  139139 for Tile –10.12.09 14:20 These calibrations now include the sick TBB region and most of Tile  141361 for Larg  141951 for Tile Receiver Overlap Strategy: 20.11.09 08:58 EtConversion:CalibGains: MskOvAlt1 Checkerboard EMEC/EMB 04.12.09 14:52 EtConversion:CalibGains: MskOvEmecOnly EMEC Only

January 13, 2010B.M. Barnett - STFC/RAL - Heidelberg 15 A Good Year: Splashes and Firsts

January 13, 2010B.M. Barnett - STFC/RAL - Heidelberg 16 A Good Year: Cosmics Some of them In coincidence with beam …

January 13, 2010B.M. Barnett - STFC/RAL - Heidelberg 17 Run Plans 2010

January 13, 2010B.M. Barnett - STFC/RAL - Heidelberg 18 Run Plans 2010 But evolution of energy … 2.36 … 7 … 10 TeV is not yet definite

January 13, 2010B.M. Barnett - STFC/RAL - Heidelberg 19 Luminosity Evolution? Lumi curve from F.Zimmermann : Nov Upgrade Week ? ?

January 13, 2010B.M. Barnett - STFC/RAL - Heidelberg 20 Future Fun Eddy currents and image currents –What happens to ATLAS when there is significant beam –Do you remember the hemispherical bump on a flat infinite plane? More energy and luminosity with trigger rates that are easy to see –2009 running wasn't really the year of L1Calo! Oh... –and calibrations.

January 13, 2010B.M. Barnett - STFC/RAL - Heidelberg 21 And more reflections …
