2 Types of Reference Materials Dictionary Thesaurus

3 Encyclopedia Why do we use encyclopedias? An encyclopedia is used when someone wants to find information about a person, place, or thing. You may want to find out information about Jimmy Carter. You can learn about him from reading information in an encyclopedia.

4 Atlas An atlas is a map. If you want to find a specific place, street, road, city, or state. Many people use an atlas when they are going on vacation or traveling to another place.

5 Dictionary We use a dictionary to look up words. You will find the meaning of words in a dictionary. For example, when you do not know the meaning of a word in a story. You may use a dictionary to look up the meaning of the word.

6 Thesaurus In a thesaurus, you will find synonyms for words. First, you look up the word in the thesaurus. Next to the word you will find a list of words that mean the same things as the word you looked up. Like wonderful –great, magnificent, excellent, terrific, cool, and fantastic Also in a thesaurus you will find an antonym for the word. Like horrible or awful would be an antonym for wonderful.

8 Using the Dictionary Information Literacy Standards: Students will understand the purpose of various reference materials (such as a dictionary, thesaurus, and an atlas). Students will understand the general organization of various reference materials (such as dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedia, and an atlas). Objective: Students will be able to identify whether a word would be found in the beginning, middle or the end of the dictionary. Students will be able to identify guide words and use them to find words that they are searching for.

13 Using the Dictionary Vocabulary: Guide words, wordbook, lexicon, entry word, bold print, beginning, middle or end

14 How do you find an entry in the dictionary quickly? Identify whether a word would be at the beginning, middle, or end of the dictionary

15 Finding a Word Dictionaries can be divided into three sections- the beginning, middle, or and. In the beginning, you will find words that start with A-H. In the middle, you will find words that start with I- Q. The end is where you will find words that start with R-Z.

22 Find the Guide Words Guide words can be very helpful. They can guide you to the word you are looking for in a dictionary. Look up the words below in your dictionary.
