3 Responsibilities of the Local Nurse Co-ordinator Be familiar with the trial Liaise with the INIS Co-ordinating centre in Oxford Ensure that all staff involved in the care of babies on the neonatal unit are informed of the trial Ensure that the mechanisms for recruitment of eligible babies (including information material) are in place, monitor their effectiveness and discuss reasons for non-recruitment of any eligible babies with relevant staff

4 Responsibilities of the Local Nurse Co-ordinator Ensure that supplies of data collection forms are always available, that they are completed and returned to the INIS co-ordinating centre promptly and deal with any queries arising Notify the trial co-ordinating centre of any serious adverse events Facilitate other aspects of local collaboration as appropriate Make all data available for verification, audit and inspection purposes as necessary Ensure that the confidentiality of all information about the trial participants is respected by all persons

8 Responsibilities of the Regional Nurse To facilitate maximum recruitment To work closely with the INIS Study Nurse to ensure maximum recruitment and the smooth running of the study To maintain enthusiasm By giving support to local co-ordinators where appropriate To keep in contact (2 x weekly) with participating hospitals in their region To assist with the collection of missing data from other participating centres To assist in with the organisation of regional meetings of INIS co- ordinators

9 Responsibilities of the Regional Nurse To make local visits to participating centres if necessary to solve simple problems To attend national meetings of neonatal nurses to disseminate information about the INIS study To maintain/update own knowledge of the INIS study To be flexible in response to the possible changing demands of the post
